Halloween is the perfect opportunity to get creative with colour and try something bright and bold. Whether it’s pumpkin spice vivid orange or Beetlejuice-inspired tones, working with bright colours doesn’t have to be scary! Pulp Riot artist Katie Geddes says trying temporary colours and extensions with contrasting colours is a great way to be creative. “Being creative doesn’t mean you have to go crazy; swapping your everyday colours with more vivid semi-permanent tones means you can brighten up copper layers or add a pop of colour to blonde hair.”
The main rule is planning – plan out your colours or accessories that you’re using. “I find mapping out my colours on paper or even digitally really helps with placement or ideas. Don’t forget about your colour wheel, especially when using contrasting colours so you don’t muddy them out or lose contrast. But above all, have fun with it! Halloween hair is so much fun and you can really come out of your comfort zone or go for colours that are deeper and richer.”
Katie’s tips for getting colour creative this Halloween:
- Work with your client’s fade out, turn it into something fun
- Utilise bigger panels for brighter pops of colour, like yellow or green
- Don’t over-complicate your colours. Sometimes two colours can look amazing, and less is definitely more
- Overlay bright coppers with a custom bright orange
- Don’t worry about your lift being warmer or not perfect, especially with oranges and reds – a little warmth makes the colour pack a punch
- Bigger sections of brighter/neon tones against colours that may overpower them is always a way to go
