Yes, we’re back with another twist on the classic bob, and this time it’s all about the Bullet Bob, which we expect may be a rising trend for 2023. You may have recently seen Florence Pugh on the cover of Vogue’s Winter Issue, and it’s giving us all the Bullet Bob vibes we could ask for. Which is why, we spoke to the hair pros to get some insight on 2023’s newest bob trend.

What is the Bullet Bob?

After witnessing the mullet, wolf cut and shag cut rise to TikTok fame over the past couple of years, it was only a matter of time before we saw the mullet take a spin on a classic look. “The Bullet Bob is a gender-neutral haircut for 2023 that falls short in the sides and longer in the back – think classic bob meets the mullet,” says Ian Harrold of Attitude Men’s Hair. “It is a haircut that is low maintenance for clients, although it will require six-weekly visits to the salon to keep the shape looking strong!”

This surprisingly chic look is suitable for most face shapes as the length can be from jaw line to just above the shoulder, Emma Simmons of Salon54 tells us. And with the style being low maintenance, it will suit most clients’ lifestyles.

Mastering the cut

The Bullet Bob is all about retaining that sexy, undone texture so just how exactly do you master the cut? “I find the best technique for creating this style is to use scissors to create the length and the blunt perimeter. Then, switching to a razor to add soft layers towards the front, over directing the hair to ensure weight is retained in the back area,” explains Emma. Ian agrees, adding that cutting with a razor helps enhance either texture or curl.

How to style the Bullet Bob

Of course, with movement and texture at the forefront of this style, texturising products are the Bullet Bob’s best friend. “The style is best when air dried or finger dried using texturising products to ensure to get that sexy, tousled texture,” says Emma. “Once dried, you can add definition by waving odd sections with a wand or styling iron and finish with something to hold.”

What’s more, Ian shares how to use the consultation to your advantage: “As we look at the current crisis, and clients looking for cheaper colour options or spreading out their appointments, precision haircuts are a fantastic way to give clients low maintenance at home but build frequency of visit to the salon. I would stress the best way to maintain the look is to have the shape re-tweaked every six weeks, so I would want to have that appointment booked in!”
