So now everyone wants warm hair apparently: the hottest hair trend for autumn For years, clients have been hellbent on removing reddish tones from their hair as if 'seeing yellow' or 'seeing warmth' were the greatest curses a colourist could cast on them. But lately, there has been a shift, as the colour trends of autumn/winter 2019 are finally embracing warmth and the plethora of shades that are on the warmer side of the colour spectrum.

Who can pull off warmer hair tones?

Previously the test of whether or not you would suit warm hair would be determined by the coolness or warmth of your skin tone, but just like mixing metals in accessories, there's no reason why you can't incorporate warmth into a mostly cool colour. "Often clients feel it’s a bold choice to go warm, particularly with coppers and vibrant reds, but there’s a warm tone and style for everyone," says Andrew Trott-Barn, Advanced Pro Salon ambassador.

How warm should you go?

"I classify warm tones for my clients as either ‘Whisper', ‘Speak' or ‘Shout’, relating to the depth and vibrancy of the applied shade and desired look," says Andrew. Whisper – includes soft, subtle shades such as warm pastels, peaches and soft gold. Speak – presents a more commercial deeper range with rich caramels, warm chocolate browns with hints of copper or red. Shout – If you’re looking for a bold statement with a ‘go big, go home’ attitude then shout shades are for you, with vibrant, confident reds and coppers that really pop, such as ColourCode Rich Red and Contrast Red with a global application for a real head turning impact.

How do you keep your warm tones warm?

Brassiness is always going to be a bug bear for clients no matter what end of the spectrum you're working with so it's essential that you recommend a salon-quality professional colour range for them to use at home to keep the colour looking rich and the hair feeling smooth. Also, beware the fade factor of warm tones. "Reds and coppers have a reputation for fading quickly compared with other shades," warns Andrew. It's key to intoduce a plex into your clients regime to maintain hair health and vibrancy. "Advanced Pro Salon’s ColourCode is directly infused with ProPlex and Argan Oil which help to retain the colour for longer and leave hair looking extremely well nourished and shiny."
