Double cleansing hair - should you shampoo twice?

Double cleansing hair - should you shampoo twice? It might be something you do as standard at the backwash, but do you recommend your clients double cleanse their hair at home? We spoke to the experts to find out.

"At Headmasters our standard is two shampoos at the backwash," explains Pervin Cirakoglu, stylist at Headmasters Mayfair. "For clients at home, I tell them that if they're washing their hair everyday or every other day only shampoo is probably needed, otherwise it will strip the hair of its natural oils. If they're washing their hair every three or four days then a double cleanse is great - the first wash gets rid of surface dirt, oils and build up of styling products, the second cleanse gets rid of whatever is left."

For Max Andreas, Claxon Hair, Schwarzkopf Pro Young Artistic Team Member, it's all about the length of the hair. "I think clients should always double cleanse at home especially with longer/shoulder length hair as you want the hair to look and feel it’s best without looking or feeling dirty especially when the hairstylist isn’t there to do it for you! I also think dirt can sometimes being an impediment to  certain styles, it can weigh the hair down too much."

We've all seen, and probably used, the term 'double cleansing' when talking about skincare, but will does phrase translate into haircare too? Rebecca Watkins, Tweedie & Marshall and Schwarzkopf Pro Young Artistic Team Member, predicts that it will. "I think there will be a movement towards double cleansing hair, and then finishing off with a treatment. There are so many products for clients to take home and use to care for their hair. It’s becoming much more of a trend with at-home beauty routines for all genders and there's a bigger focus on self-care rituals."

This link to skincare is one that Caitlin Trenholm, Salon 3, and Schwarzkopf Pro Young Artistic Team Member, picks up on too. "I can see a movement towards hair cleansing, just as we see the double face cleanse ritual has become the norm. It benefits the clients, they get longer out of their blowdry and it helps with the cleansing of the scalp most importantly."

Benefits for the scalp and styling? Sounds like double cleansing is a win all round.
