How to create a messy top knot - step-by-step From the catwalk to the high street, the top knot has become one of the must-have looks of this decade. Aaron Carlo of Headmasters, London, showcases how you can create this top knot with a messy undone finish that is perfect for festivals or the beach.

Step One: Prep the hair with L'Oréal Professionnel Tecni Art Pli and blow-dry upwards towards the crown. Step Two: Pull the hair into a tight ponytail on top of the head using a pintail comb. This will ensure hair is super smooth and secure. To make the look Autumn/Winter 2012, place the ponytail to one side.

Step Three: Smooth Mythic Oil onto the lengths and ends to add gloss, then twist the hair back on itself around the base. Step Four: Secure with pins leaving the ends loose to one side.
