How to beat feelings of loneliness as a freelancer Loneliness is one of the biggest enemies of working on your own, explains Sheila Abrahams, director of the Freelance Hairdressers Association. She points out however that in this day in age you don’t need to be on your own. Here are Sheila’s tips for building a support network, boosting your confidence as a freelancer and overcome any concerns you might have related to working on your own in a client’s own home…

1. Become part of a freelance social media group

Sheila says it's extremely useful to discuss the problems you encounter on a day to day basis with fellow freelancers. If you become part of a social media group or create your own in your local area you will be able to share issues with fellow freelancers with confidence and in turn this will reduce any feelings of loneliness.

 2. Book regular education and training courses

Going on training days will give you the opportunity to mix with other freelance hairdressers and it will help to boost your confidence. Sheila says you can’t afford to ignore education and training as your clients will expect you to be on your top of your game when it comes to trends and techniques.

3. Communicate your whereabouts with others

Whenever you visit a new client’s home for the first time, let someone know where you are and how long you will be there. Sheila also suggests asking a friend to call you at a set time to give you an excuse to leave if necessary.

4. Join a freelance organisation to reduce loneliness

Sheila’s key piece of advice for freelancers who are feeling lonely or in need of a confidence boost is to join an organisation such as the Freelance Hairdressers Association. She explains that working alone doesn’t mean you have to be on your own. Membership will give you access to a virtual staffroom, information about events and training, plus plenty of advice and business protection. Visit thefha.org for more information.
