With UK salons still closed under lockdown rulings online hair and beauty booking site, Treatwell has shared some encouraging news with record numbers of hair salon bookings through their site from a host of European countries that have had their Coronavirus lockdown rules eased.

Germany announced on the 16 April that hair and beauty salons were permitted to reopen on the 4 May and following this the first appointment was booked through the site just 5 minutes after The Government announcement. Since then booking on Treatwell for German salons have increased by 2000%.

It was a similarly encouraging story from the French hair and beauty salon industry, which was permitted to reopen on the 11 of May. Bookings on Treatwell are currently up by 3100% in France.

The new normal – how has hair salon customer behaviour changed in Europe?

It’s no surprise that clients are currently itching for hair treatments after months of home care. Comparing bookings before and after the lockdown, Treatwell saw a big increase in daily bookings of hair treatments across the markets that have reopened, +51% (vs. before lockdown). The number of hair colouring treatments has also sky-rocketed – with the numbers doubled in comparison with pre lockdown.

Perhaps the most surprising statistics to come from the markets that have reopened is that men are dominating the bookings. As men’s haircuts have been the most booked treatment in the hair category.

While the data from Treatwell looks promising, we have to wait to see what the new normal will look like when the UK hair and beauty reopens, which we know will not be until the 4 July at the earliest.

“We’re fortunate that we can take learnings from some of our other markets as they reopen,” says Giorgia Rossi, chief operating officer at Treatwell. “These learnings are helping us build ‘best practice’ advice which we plan to share with UK trading bodies and the government, as suggestions for the UK guidelines, and with our partners. We’re continuing to support our partners, including aiding and advising on reopening for business, safely and successfully.”
