How phil ring is interpreting the pixelated colour trend with joico Hairdressers Journal was lucky enough to attend Joico's First Ever Global Destination Education in the Dominican Republic this month. Not only was it a great chance to connect with 1000s of hairdressers from around the world, we also got the chance to watch and exclusively chat to some of the most talented hairdressers and colourists around. This included the amazing Philip Ring who talked us through a colour craze that we are obsessed with - pixelated hair. "I’ll be completely honest, when I first saw pixelated hair it was on Instagram," Admits Phil. "And then I was in a group called Hairdressers Education Forum where there is 80,000 hairdressers. It was almost like a challenge, everybody was trying to figure it out before everybody else did." Pixelated hair Phil is a prime example that the main things you need are talent and a can do attitude to turn your hand at creative colour. "At the time I had just moved across state - I didn’t have a single client - I just had time and mannequins. I took some of the inspiration photos that I saw online and  just started to recreate them. It took 3 mannequins before I figured it out perfectly and was ready to do it on a person." When establishing his own technique Phil turned to historic inspiration through to now to achieve his look. "I’ve done my research and actually Vidal Sassoon and Annie Humphreys in 1987 did a pixelated colour but they cut it to show all the layers of colour." "In the 1990s, DJ Freed from Key Lime Pie Salon in Atlanta, she created rooster tail colour and it was a natural versions of this for Aveda," He notes. "Now X-presion Creativos in Madrid have recreated pixelated hair and they just have brought it all back. It’s cool to see it recycle!" To see more from our time at Joico Destination Education make sure you buy our March issue.
