London hairdresser launches the h.a.i.r foundation to help homeless women
London hairdresser Martyn Maxey is calling on all hairdressers to get involved in The H.A.I.R Foundation – the new organisation to help homeless women he set up earlier this year. The concept is for hairdressers to offer their skills to help women regain their confidence and self esteem in helping them overcome personal trauma through experience of human trafficking, drug and alcohol abuse as well as physical and mental abuse. The H.A.I.R Foundation is looking for stylists to commit to a minimum of two days a year (you can volunteer for more) to tend to the tresses of women from local shelters in a bid to boost their confidence as part of a wider programme of support. To kick start the initiative, the first event took place on Sunday 19th March with 20 women from the Marylebone Project in attendance, supported by eight volunteer hairdressers from Martyn’s salon as well as other London salons and juniors from Harrow College. Initially working with the Marylebone Project in London, hairdressers are being asked to offer three to five haircuts a day in a salon environment, with consultations designed to give the women a voice and a choice. The H.A.I.R Foundation aims to build a UK wide network of salons to volunteer working with drop-in, day and care centres, using the current project as a blue print. It is hoped that salon owners will see the benefit to business, staff and the community and come and see what the organisation is doing. Martyn explains: “We are lucky to be able to make people feel special and beautiful simply with a pair of scissors. This is more than just a haircut, it is supporting women to take the steps they need to feel good about themselves and a valued member of society." “The women were very happy to have this experience, and were very positive about it. It did a lot to build their confidence and esteem, and the team did a fantastic job with them,” concluded Valentina Ines La Mela from the Marylebone Project.
