Why nearly 50% of salon owners have considered closing their salons Phorest Salon Software has recently surveyed 1,000 salons around the world and discovered that nearly half of salon owners have considered closing their salons. The majority of those who contemplated terminating their business did so when their salon was already well established or three years into business. The statistics collected from Phorest Salon Software also revealed the reasons behind salon closures. The research found that almost a third of salon owners found hiring and managing staff to be the most challenging aspect of their business, followed by external factors such as rent, tax and the recession. We've listed the key stats from the survey below...

The key findings

Out of those who had considered closing their salon, the below contributing factors were cited.
  • 32% found hiring and managing staff to be the most challenging aspect of running a business.
  • 22% had considered giving up due to external factors such as rent, tax and the recession.
  • 19% found that their passion for hair and beauty had turned into a chore.
  • 12% found marketing their salon difficult.
  • 10% couldn’t keep up with the admin and accounting.
  • 3% struggled to juggle family life and running a business.
  • 2% wanted to retire.
why salon owners close salons Ronan Perceval, CEO of Phorest Salon Software, commented: “Salon professionals spend a lot of their time lending a supportive ear to the clients in their chair, but when it comes to having someone they can lean on for support, being an owner or manager of an independent salon business can be lonely and isolating." To help salon owners fight these feelings of loneliness and boost their skills as business leaders, Phorest Salon Salon Software has created some initiatives. These include a free six part salon management course and a salon membership hub, where salon owners can book a free consultation with the topic of their choice.
