6 tips for styling brides with natural afro hair Natural hair continues to increase in popularity, and whereas previously brides would be reluctant to sport their natural crowning glory on their Big Day, things have thankfully changed. However if you don't work with natural hair that often you might be a bit nervous about a bride’s request for styling ideas for natural tresses. Let My Hair Bar co-founder and senior stylist, Natasha John-Lewis, talk you through with her top styling tips... 1. Get Detangling - Natural hair is prone to tangles, so ensure you apply detangling sprays and moisturising sprays on the Big Day for a smooth, tangle-free finish. If a bride decides to wear an updo, apply a foam wrap and set it by adding a little heat which will lead to style longevity. 2. Keep Curls Nourished - Conversely, if a bride would like to wear her natural curls/coils on her wedding day, I would suggest applying a curling custard or curling cream to keep curls defined and nourished. After applying product, use your hairdryer with a diffuser attached, and lightly dry to keep curls set, but don’t over dry or curls will become crunchy. https://www.instagram.com/p/Bbwnb8nAabq/?taken-by=myhairbarlondon 3. Give Curls A Stretch - Natural hair is prone to shrinkage when it interacts with moisture in the air, so to prolong a style, I would suggest using a hairdryer to gently stretch the hair. The trick is grip sections of the hair and run the dryer up and down the lengths from a distance, don’t apply too much pressure, as we don’t want to alter the natural curl formation of the hair, just stretch it slightly. 4. Book Regular Treatments - As soon as the bride books you as her stylist, encourage her to schedule in a moisture treatment plan. Natural hair tends to be low in lustre, so natural brides-to-be must come in for regular moisturising treatments (at least every two weeks leading up to the wedding) to ensure that hair won’t look dull and flat on the Big Day. 5. Take Time To Trim - Similarly, brides-to-be must ensure they have regular trims – every 5-6 weeks – to prevent hair from snapping off and snagging at the ends. 6. Offer Advice on Diet - We as stylists know that diet and nutrition is the cornerstone to healthy hair. Encourage your bride to eat the right foods to maximise growth such as protein, iron, omega and biotin-rich foods.
