Mp supports hairdressing apprentices A Southend based training organisation has won the support of the local MP in spearheading the campaign to recruit more apprentices. Sir David Amess MP for Southend West visited the London Road studio of Central Hairdressing Academy to see young apprentices learning hair and barbering skills. He watched apprentices as they worked on models under the close eye of tutors, honing their blow drying, shampooing, cutting and styling skills. And, he was clearly impressed by what he saw. He said: “I was really inspired by watching and talking to the young people I met at Central Hairdressing Academy. They have a real passion for their trade and see the value in apprenticeships.” Managing director of Central Hairdressing Academy, Martin Kolton, who was awarded an MBE for his services to hairdressing training, was able to share concerns with Sir David over the need to recruit more apprentices. Martin said: “More young people at 16 are staying on at school and fewer choose to go into apprenticeships. We need to make them aware of the many advantages of taking up apprentices and, most of all, the chance to earn while they learn. Sir David has now vowed to highlight the value of apprentices and will raise the issue in Parliament. He added: “There is so much value in learning a craft or trade and it is great to meet young people who are so committed to getting their careers off the ground. want to support them in every way I can and will certainly be talking about the passion I have seen from these young hairdressers in the House of Commons.”
