Charlotte mensah celebrates the year of return in ghana Over the New Year Ghana celebrated the 'Year of Return', where London-based notable Ghanian figures, including British Hairdressing Awards Hall of Fame-r Charlotte Mensah, headed to the Homeland to celebrate all aspects of their African culture. The events came from a statement made by the Ghanian president Nana Akufo-Addo when he declared 2019 the 'Year of Return , Ghana 2019' as it marked 400 years since the arrival of Africans in the English colonies at Point Comfort, Virginia, in 1619. A whole host of Ghanian-heritage celebrities and influencers headed to Ghana to take in the turn of a new year and emerge themselves in the rich culture of the country. To celebrate, Charlotte Mensah presented her collection of Afro hair looks in a stunning display at The Galleria, Kempinski Hotel, Gold Coast City in Accra the capital city. charlotte mensah ghana hair show By heralding women as queens in a myriad of ways, Charlotte drove the needed conversation on hair and its historic function, in the form of cultural artefacts. By leading a live hair-threading on stage, CharlotteĀ  unpacked her growth trajectory for the brand, while presenting women models with kinky hair textures, effortlessly chic buzzcuts, which represented the historic Ghanaian warrior Yaa Asantewaa, and liberated sparse-knots. On the event, Charlotte said, "In a time of both cultural and philosophical reflection, we are looking to the past in order to pave the way to a united future. It was important for me to seize this opportunity in Ghana, to celebrate hair in its organic natural state. Hair has gone through so many processes of change and I wanted to explore this through the event."
