What does glamour mean to you? we ask top stylists...

As we celebrate the best of red carpet styling, we ask a host of hairdressers why they love glamorous hair...

Julian Holland

"Feeling good about yourself is wonderful; it allows us to have the confidence that sometimes we lack, it enhances the way other people see us and makes our days so much better. I think when people feel glamorous they can take on the world. Every generation has iconic women who epitomise glamour - think Elizabeth Taylor, Audrey Hepburn, Marilyn Monroe and Jane Fonda - they were all incredibly beautiful, sassy yet smart and exuding confidence. As glamour represents something different to each of us, communication is the best tool to achieve a glamorous result. Listening to my clients allows me to advise them and deliver that breathtaking feeling each and every time."

Mark Leeson

"For me, glamour is about beautifully groomed hair, rich in colour and ultra healthy and glossy. But it's also the whole package - manicured nails, glowing skin, well-cut clothes and high-quality fabrics. Marilyn Monroe was the ultimate glamour girl, and while there are lots of modern day icons who break all the traditional rules, I'm still a fan of traditional 1950's looks. To look glamorous a woman has to feel glamorous. Taking time on the small touches such as nails, brows, moisturising and deep conditioning treatments all give the basecoat for a gorgeous top coat."

Michael Young

"Glamour is often used in the wrong context and made to seem old fashioned. However, I think glamour is more of a sophisticated beauty, classic but not dated, often understated, a timeless elegance which transcends across generations. A lot of the original supermodels still continue to do glamour well like Elle Macpherson and Claudia Schiffer. I also think Angelina Jolie, Charlize Theron and Rosie Huntington-Whitely are great glamour girls who always get the balance right. Hooker & Young are synonymous with glamour, so we always aim to deliver that with our blow-drying and finishing skills to ensure our clients leave with the wow factor. It's all about the finish."

Richard Ward

"Glamour is about being natural and confident. Some of the most intricate styles aren't glamorous, even though technically they might be perfect. Glamorous hair is about being radiant, healthy, lustrous and worn with flair and panache, in a way that suits the individual. Audrey Hepburn's crop was quite unglamorous technically, yet she made it her own and as such it became a whole 'beat generation' look that she spearheaded which in itself became glamorous. Currently, Yasmin Le Bon is always glamorous, as are Iman, Penelope Cruz, Anne Hathaway, Jennifer Aniston, Vanessa Paradis and Sharon Stone."

Akin Konizi

"Glamour is when a woman uninhibitedly expresses an air of confidence, romance and is not afraid to be her best. For me, Diane Kruger epitomises glamour, whether she is in a red evening dress and lipstick or walking through the countryside in a pair of wellies. Making your clients feel glamorous is not just the end result; it is how you approach the consultation, giving them the confidence and belief in themselves and how they look. Finally, it is about creating a style that makes them look and feel great whatever the occasion."

Ken Picton

"Glamour to me is a woman who looks groomed and feels confident. It doesn't have to be an identikit red lips/bouncy blow-dry combination - there's plenty of room for individuality. It's more an aura of confidence that being well-groomed exudes. Dita von Teese is immaculately groomed with a sense of confidence and sex appeal; all the ingredients for glamour."
