What do people really want from a salon?

What do people really want from a salon? The other night I had a fascinating and really quite eye-opening conversation with friends about what they want from a hairdressing salon. I say fascinating because it turns out that not every client craves the high-standard-treat-me-like-a-princess experience that I do. Said conversation began with friend one - who, for the record, was sporting big, bouncy locks that Cheryl Cole would be pround of! - raving about her new hair salon. She loved it because: 1, they don't try to sell anything 2, when you have a drink the cups and saucers don't all match so it feels like home from home. 3, the owner has a dog, which sometimes wanders round the salon. After two-and-a-half years working at HJ Towers, I was, as you can imagine, quite horrified by this and expected to hear disgust around the table. Did I? God no! Instead the consensus was that this sounded amazing. They went on to agree that all mirrors should be removed from salons until the cut is over because they make you feel self concious. Who knew? So what am I saying? Should all salons serve their beverages in any old tat and let their animals run free around the salon? Of course not, but it is another reminder of the importance of knowing your clients and what they actually want, rather than just striving to some ideal you assume they want.
