Top tips on becoming a tv hairdresser

From features on the latest hair trends on morning television to the growing passion for makeover shows, there are plenty of opportunities for talented, charismatic hairdressers to make a name for themselves.

While the finanical rewards of being a TV Hairdresser are smaller than you might expect; being streamed into millions of homes is the most effective way to build a public profile and increase business.

Leading celebrity hairdressers explain the key ingredients for success on the small screen.

"Make sure you find out as much as possible about the programme. Don't be tempted by those 15 minutes of fame because if the show doesn't portray you, or the profession in a good light, it's not a wise move.

A production team can edit you as a character, and this is how you are perceived by the public, so remember to enter into any TV project with your eyes wide open. It's incredibly exciting being offered TV work but make sure you find out exactly what's required of you and that the concept is a good fit for you and the brand you're involved with.

It's got to portray you positively. There have certainly been shows in the past that have showcased hairdressers and our profession in the wrong light."  charles-Worthington-TV.jpg

"Don't assume that just because you are good with your clients that you'll be a natural in front of the camera.

If you're serious about TV, get some media training and be prepared to take advice. I never take any opportunity for granted but always give it my best shot.

Follow your dream and with hard work, perseverance, the right attitude and an outgoing personality you will succeed."

"You have to be focused and really want it. You need to be yourself, but take inspiration from the professionals.

Only since I've been doing TV have I really appreciated how the professional presenters can anchor a whole broadcast - respect to them. Be prepared for the long haul and have thick skin! Don't be too niche and precious - arrogance simply doesn't work in this game. Ultimately, you need to appeal to millions of people."

"You need to be a very good all round hairdresser. You may be asked one day to create hair with a red carpet theme, and another day to transform a housewife, so you need to be very versatile. Also, it's all about being yourself. Be good at what you do and you will go far."
