The rise of social media

Love it or hate it, social media is here to stay and with millions of people each month joining platforms such as Facebook and Twitter, it is becoming necessary in some cases for businesses to introduce a policy on the use of social media in the workplace. In the hairdressing industry, social media is being used positively to promote the skills of individuals and salons with companies - large and small - using Facebook to interact with, and attract new customers. In-salon promotions, new treatments, late appointments and team achievements are being promoted via social media, ensuring your client base is continually reminded of you and your salon's services.
It is also worth remembering, however, that poor service and bad experiences can also be brought to the attention of the masses via these same platforms and maintaining a positive reputation for your business in a society where so much information is 'shared' can be difficult. There have also been allegations of bullying as team members have posted negative comments - often outside of working hours - about their colleagues, and this is a difficult situation to manage.
There is no doubt that the use of social media platforms is increasing massively, and a policy detailing what is expected of the employee, highlighting that monitoring may take place and disciplinary action taken against those that breach the policy, is something worth considering for all businesses.
