How to: styling ringlet curls   Jourdan Dunn Instagram/Jourdan Dunn  Natural curls have crept their way back onto the trend scale with celebs like Rihanna, Ella Eyre and Jourdan Dunn sporting the style over the summer. But curly hair has a well-earned reputation for being one of the hardest hair types to manage and style. It's usually drier, meaning it's more easily affected by humidity as well as being prone to split ends and breakage. 1. After washing, gently towel dry the hair and blot (don't rub) with the towel. Rubbing wet hair with a towel causes damage that leads to frizzy hair.
  2. Avoid brushing curly hair because it will cause hair to frizz and separate due to a breaking up of the curl. Instead, use a wide-tooth plastic comb to gently detangle the hair.
  3. If the hair is thick and coarse, apply a silicone serum to the length before you start styling.
  4. If hair is quite fine, then use a silicone spray and apply as little as possible to the length of the hair, avoiding the scalp. I like OSMO™ Blinding Shine Illuminating Finisher as it nourishes curls and adds a vibrant, sleek finish.
  5. If you only want minimal hold, use lightweight styling lotions or gels, avoid using hairsprays as they can lead to frizzy hair.
  6. Letting the hair dry naturally is definitely less damaging, but not always practical. Use your hair dryer on a low setting with a diffuser attachment. This reduces the impact of the air blowing over the hair, and helps curls maintain their shape. Be sure to scrunch (lightly squeeze) the curls, gently lifting hair at the root as you go. It helps to apply a styling cream first; I like O&M’s Style Guru Styling Cream which has a lightweight, smooth texture leaving curly hair soft to touch.
