Spring/summer trends 2010 - colour

Discovering new and daring colour combinations is always exciting and spring/summer 2010 looks don't disappoint. We ask the experts what tones and shades will be big for the coming months.

"Rich chocolate is in for s/s, along with copper, rusts, and strawberry

blondes - really rich multi dimensional shades are back. Caramel blondes,

strong chestnuts, shades with a lot more warmth in are key.  Lavender slices underneath a blonde give the element of movement that is so essential this season.

"The emphasis is on multi tones especially for blondes and coppers - at least 3 or 4 shades, but keep to the same tone so it's not a huge contrast - so no more than 2 levels difference between the three colours and stick within same shade, eg red copper, copper gold and rich copper. We're moving away from bright light white blondes so really look for golds and depth."

Robert Masciave, Metropolis HairdressingColour

"The vintage, worn in look is  very hot right now. Hair starts off darker at the roots then gradually fades to a lighter hue for a sun kissed effect."

"With summer on the way and the 80s trend slowly softening, movement, soft texture and gorgeously conditioned locks are what it's all about! Ultra-hot colours like clean blondes and warm caramels should be added through the hair to freshen your client's style this season to give them that sun kissed look. Alternatively, heat up their hair with vibrant gold and copper tones to accentuate texture and add an extra edge to the cut."

Aaron Blondell, John Carne Hairdressing

"To keep hair looking glossy and healthy I suggest asking your stylist for sun-kissed highlights which are always popular at this time of year. Brunettes should ask for caramel or honey shades and light blondes should try beiges, or even strawberry pinks, blended and weaved in with other colours. This will give hair depth and movement whilst giving your colour gloss and lustre."

Errol Douglas

"Colour Prisms, clear natural glosses to keep hair looking shiny and super healthy, are going to be big for summer 2010.  And they only cost £35-£45 for clients so are extremely wallet-friendly! Tints and all over colours are also big for 2010."

"This spring/summer brings colour back to nature, reds are pared down but not boring, think of vibrant beautiful poppies or rich tomato with rustic coppers. Lighter blondes will be warm with oatmeal and honey and the very lightest blondes will be shaded with cotton tones and reflects.

"Rich oak and teak for brunettes look beautiful but keep the colour tonal, so varying shades of the same colours but graduating out from light to dark. This can be achieved using Essensity Organic colour by Schwarzkopf as it covers up to 70% leaving the hair and colour to shimmer and shine. Apply colour like makeup in the hair adding blushes and shades of contrasting but harmonising colours next to each other."

Day light disco
- using permanent colour great for blonde shades

"Leaving a veil section either side of the parting of natural colour, then either side of this parting place 4 woven packets of  different levels of pre-lightener. When painting on the colour to the foil paint on in a diagonal line away from the root. This will give a boho sparkly blonde sheen."

Coral colour- using permanent colour in your reds and coppers

"Good for curly hair types. Taking random sections back comb the ends and using your hands scrunch in the colour to those back combed ends. The end results are little burst of colour."

"Great for shaggier hair cuts this is layering with colour. Starting at the nape taking inch section from ear to ear and apply one colour, then your next inch section on top of that your second chosen colour repeating this to the top. Various blondes or various gold and coppers."

Fabric colour- using permanent colour

"Again great for curly hair types and very natural colour effect taking random sections and twisting the hair then using your fingers to smudge the colour through. This would work well with all shades of colour; two shades works best."

Three dimensional colours- using permanent colour

"Use of at least 2 colours, good for use with fashion colours, (thick slices/sections) let the colours develop as normal then at the basin with pre lightener before the colour is washed off.  Smudge pre-lightener quickly through to erase any lines."

Autumn fall - using semi permanent and permanent

"For brown/red colours 3 colours from dark to light, 3 star effects and the ends of the 3rd star.  Use the colour on the top to make the hair thicker and richer."

Ice cream sundae- using semi permanent colour

"For a soft pastel shades do highlights using pre lightener before washing any colour off.  Go through packets and apply the toner. When this then washes off you will achieve softer shades."

West End swirl - using hi lift tint/pre-lightener

"Take the crown section placing highlights around the crown.  They can be weaved long sections or slices to give an individual soft swirl ripple to your highlight."
