Simple steps to give your salon a new lease of life

What better time than the new year to give your salon a new lease of life?

But if you don't have the time, money or inclination for a total refurbishment, why not opt for a mini-makeover instead? - after all, the  minutia often make the biggest and most lasting impression.

With a little attention to detail, there are many ways to add a splash of colour or create a focal point and it doesn't need to blow the budget.

"Finishing touches are so important," explains salon owner Amanda Dicker from The Chapel. "It's the little details that people notice and remember that can make or break a salon's ambience. They also determine whether a client feels happy and excited to be there and - even more importantly - if they want to come back."

There is a whole range of small touches salons can add with ease, from vases of beautiful flowers to colourful cushions in the waiting area and burning scented candles in the toilets.

"I would suggest you make the most highly visible touches your priority," Amanda adds. "As long as your salon is ultra-clean and tidy, you can leave the major refurb jobs for another day.

"Focus on the flowers, soft furnishings, refreshments and comfort factor in the reception area and bathrooms to create a good impression. And, don't overlook the importance of lighting and aroma. You should use the same guidelines in the salon as you would at home."

So, what can you do to add a bit of interest to the salon without spending a fortune? Here are some ideas.

  1. flowers.jpgFlowers

A beautiful floral display in the reception area creates a warm, welcoming feel. Professional florists can charge hundreds of pounds a week, but why not arrange your own? London-based Errol Douglas was spending about £1,000 per month on fresh flowers but by doing it himself, he now spends less than £300.

  2. upolstery.jpgSoft Furnishings

Brighten up a dull sofa with brightly coloured cushions. If you don't have a colour scheme in the salon, why not choose something that will be a talking point, such as a Union Jack or Warhol-inspired cover?

  3. refreshments.jpgRefreshments

Whether it's hot or cold drinks, opt for new, cups and glasses. Why not print your logo on the front or choose a colour theme? Whether it is plain white, coloured or patterned, always make sure they are clean - there is nothing worse than lipstick or old coffee marks. A small accompanying snack doesn't have to cost the earth but can make a difference - a small slice of chocolate cake, crispy biscuits or a small bowl of nuts will make your clients feel special.

  4. candles.jpgCandles

Scented candles in the backwash, and especially in the toilets, will add an ambience to the area. As well as covering up nasty whiffs, they bring a home from home feel to the salon. And if you get your logo printed on the front you can also sell them or give them to clients as a special gift. Brooks & Brooks in London originally had candles for Christmas presents but they were so popular they now retail them at £10.95.

  5. magazines.jpgMagazines

Regularly update magazines and books on your coffee tables. Torn pages and old issues can give the impression you don't care so ensure every month they are replaced. Give your old copies to the local hospital or doctor's surgery.

  6. Artwork.jpgImagery

Create an art gallery of local artists work or unusual posters. These can easily transform a wall into a statement feature and will add interest for clients.
