Scottish salon heroes: tracey devine Scottish Salon Heroes: Tracey DevineTracey Devine is one of the best-loved women in British hairdressing, and has been flying the flag for Scottish style since opening Angels salon in 1999. “When I opened my first salon I was just a great hairdresser with good people skills," she says. "I learnt the business side the hard way, by making mistakes and taking risks. I didn’t even know about VAT registration and got stung heavily." Tracey’s creative skills are renowned – she’s been named HJ’s Scottish Hairdresser of the Year three times at HJ’s British Hairdressing Awards – but building her business acumen was a gradual and often difficult process. Opening her first Angels salon in Aberdeen’s St Andrew’s Street in 1999 proved a major learning curve. "I didn’t know nearly enough about running a business in the early days – I expected it to run itself, but you can only get away with this for so long before it becomes noticeable,” says Tracey. “It’s imperative to know where money is coming from and going to – if you lose sight of this your business, quite simply, will not survive. No matter how well you cut hair, you have to understand budgets and create a successful business model." Her instincts proved effective and within two years the team and client base had grown to such an extent that Tracey had to look at opening a second salon, and eventually a third outside of the city centre. And, in 2012, Tracey added to her accolades by winning the title of Men's Hairdresser of the Year at HJs British Hairdressing Awards 2012. In 2014, Tracey made the decision to sell Angels and focus on her session work and role as creative director for Affinage. She now travels the globe working on shoots, seminars and product development - as well as creating that gorgeous, fashion-forward hair that she's been known for over the last 15 years.
