Red carpet hairstyles: 84th annual academy awards

Here, Warren Holmes, international creative director of Nicky Clarke shares his thoughts on the hottest hair from the evening.

"Angelina looked stunning on the red carpet. It was refreshing to see her dropping a relaxed but still elegant look.  I'm not convinced the colour is great with her skin tone but she looked radiant so fair play to her."

"Kirsten went for a relaxed yet stylish look, with her glossy waves. The colour and shine really stands out as she went for natural make up and nude colour dress. A great example of less is more. "

"Taking inspiration from Blondie, Anna looks wicked here. Her style has a strong attitude about but doesn't look out of place on the red carpet. The spider fringe is bang on and she's rocking the platinum blonde.  A winning look."

"Although we've seen it numerous times, it's a statement maker. The bob length was all about encouraging shine and a high gloss finish."

"I would like to have seen more interest with Busy's hair. She could have chosen to show off the colour more buy adding movement through the length. I like to see hair pulled over to one side, it shows off her neck and statement earring but I would have pushed the whole look further."

"The honey blonde tone of Stacey's hair is a wonderful match for her gold dress. Placing the hair to one side with the lose waves creates a great Hollywood glamour look. "

"There is always somebody who goes for a change with a haircut and this one stuck out for me; great shape, long round layers and slightly shattered ends. I like the texture, it wasn't glamour driven it had a matte feeling too it without it looking to unstructured and messy, the sort of hair she will undoubtedly run her fingers through and shake."

"Glenn brings style with a relaxed feel to the red carpet  - a great combination that balances out her tuxedo style jacket. Again a good use of product here, as the hair looks free to move."

"There is always one person who you know will drop the same look and Gwyneth Paltrow with her straight one length centered long bob is a certainty.... so she went and mixed up and fair play to her. I thought she was one of the highlights. She was on trend with a low ponytail that almost looked like a faux bob from the front but the back revealed a low tied sleek ponytail."

"The stand-out down do for me, paying homage to and slightly reminiscent of hair icon Grace Kelly. Penelope's versatility is unarguable; she sets the tone of awards season. This wave is achieved by curling the hair on a medium iron in brickwork formation and left to set. Copious amounts of mousse is vital for the hair to have substance to be sculpted in such formation."

"Rooney Mara dominates the bun. She leads the way and even though she was predictable she was still so chic. I love her razor sharp fringe, which has become her signature look. She nodded to the runway with a sleek high shine almost wet finish."

"Sandra's statement style was the winning ponytail of the evening. Hair was pulled back and off the face, which something Sandra is prone to do. The texture was more distressed and dishevelled to add an element of interest."

"I'm really fond of a braid on the red carpet, it adds a bit of fun to the evening and lightens the mood of what can potentially get stiff at times. Here we see Berenice's red hair braided on the hairline and gathered into a low knot at the nape of the neck. It was executed very well and something that would have comfortable befitted the runway."
