Red carpet hair: sag awards 2012
Stars of the big screen celebrated at the 2012 SAG Awards and with a red carpet guestlist that included Angelina Jolie, Michelle Williams and Kelly Osbourne, the event was a stylish affair.

Plaits continue to be a red carpet trend, with Busy Phillips, Dianna Agro and Heather Morris all sporting twisted styles, while ponytails are still popular too with looks ranging from high and glossy on Sofia Vergara and Berenice Bejo to short and voluminous on Kelly Osbourne and Octavia Spencer.

Here we look at the hottest hairstyles from the red carpet with expert thoughts from Darren Ambrose at D&J Ambrose, Pinner, Middlesex and Clive Johnston at Clive Alexander Hair Cutters, Enniskillen, County Fermanagh

Amber Heard

DA: I love this up-do on Amber, it adds a touch of glamour and classiness compared to her usual wavy locks; it looks sophisticated without being too over-worked.

Angelina Jolie

CJ: Sporting her synonymous swept back style, Angelina is looking as demure and effortlessly glam as ever. I'm loving her subtle ombre tones that mellow out her sometimes sharp look.

Busy Phillips

DA: A chic ponytail would have worked a lot better with this outfit and would have added a touch of glamour to her red carpet look - Busy's whole style is looking a little too casual for an awards night and her hair lacks any real style.

Heather Morris

CJ: Heather has completely lost the balance between glamour and personality. While the dishevelled curls improve this look, the fringe is doing nothing for her face shape and the colour looks a little drab and lifeless.

dianna-agron-hair-sag-awards-2012.jpg
Dianna Agron

DA: I usually can't criticise Dianna's hair, but this look just isn't working for her. It looks like it's been over worked to look effortless and the result is a slightly over-styled, slightly messy up-do with far too many flyaways.

Jessica Chastain

CJ: Jessica loves a vintage style and she hasn't let us down here; wearing royal blue to accentuate her copper tones and sporting an ultra-sleek, modern take on the marcel wave.

Emily Blunt

DA: Oh Emily! This deep black is doing nothing for her skin tone and the shape has aged her way beyond her years here. A sweeping fringe or an over-the-shoulder style would have framed her face much better

Tina Fey

DA: I love Tina's usual wavy locks and would love to have seen her show them off on the red carpet, even if only to cover up those earrings!

Berenice Bejo

DA: While her updo works with the rest of her outfit, I'm not a huge fan of Berenice's auburn locks - her usual deeper brown suits her skin tone much more.

Emma Stone

CJ: Emma always seems to go the same way with her updos. I'd love to see her try something with a little more volume and personality; this style is a little outdated and she's used too much product in her hair leaving it looking weighed down and slightly greasy.

Kelly Osbourne

DA: Only Kelly could look that fresh-faced and girly whilst pinpointing the perfect level of personality with those subtle pink highlights and curled fringe - just wonderful.

Octavia Spencer

DA: A good choice by Octavia here with an up-do that lengthens her face and shows off her neckline keeping it ultra-sleek and shiny to make the perfect red-carpet look.

Paz Vega

DA: Paz is just exuding effortless glamour with her loose waves hanging naturally over her shoulder and those beautifully shiny locks. Her auburn highlights are also brought out even more against the sheer white dress.

Lea Michele

CJ: Look at all that hair! Shiny and glamorous without looking too over-worked. Just one critique - slightly more volume at the roots and this would be the perfect red carpet hair.

meryl-streep-hair-sag-awards-2012.jpg
Glenn Close

DA: Glenn looks as beautiful as always, even with this wonderfully simple style. As women get older they often choose a darker shade for their hair, but her blonde brings out the glow in her skin, and the sweeping fringe and layered cut keeps her looking youthful.

Meryl Streep

CJ: I would have loved to see Meryl with a more sophisticated style here; the key to any glamorous look starts with shiny hair and she could definitely have done with a good deep-conditioning treatment before she took to the red carpet.

Ashlee Simpson

CJ: One word - beautiful. Simply beautiful; sleek and sophisticated and the subtle, darker roots make the look more interesting.

Michelle Williams

CJ: What a beauty. Michelle's strawberry blonde hair brings out her rosy cheeks on her wonderfully fair skin.

rose-byrne-hair-sag-awards-2012.jpg
Sofia Vergara

CJ: Only Sofia could sport such a simple, low-set pony and still look this glamorous. Her hair looks shiny, healthy and sleek - just beautiful.

Rose Byrne

DA: Rose is never far from a touch of sophistication and this ultra-chic, yet simple bob accentuates her face shape and shows-off the beautiful detail of her dress.

tilda-swinton-sag-awards-2012-hair.jpg
Jane Lynch

CJ: I can't complain about Jane's hair - it looks simple yet styled perfectly and the multi-tonal highlights keeps her skin tone looking fresh and young.

Tilda Swinton

CJ: Tilda has clearly made an effort to make her hair look sleek for the red carpet and the different blonde tones in her hair soften her porcelain skin tone.

viola-davis-sag-awards-2012.jpg
Viola Davis

DA: I can't praise Viola enough for this look, her hair looks shiny and healthy and the style looks red carpet perfect and epitomises sophistication.

Naya Rivera

CJ: Naya's a natural beauty but I think her hair is a little over-worked here and doesn't frame her face well - she should definitely stick to her usual sleek waves in the future.

zoe-saldana-hair-sag-awards-2012.jpg
Zoe Saldana

DA: Two words Zoe - blow-dry. Had she got a good one, this would have been a simple, dishevelled up-do which is hugely popular at the moment, instead it just looks a little scruffy.

Natalie Portman

DA:  imagine she looks this lovely even when she's just popping to the shops but the simple, glam look always works for Natalie and she certainly accentuates it here with this swept-back style and shiny curls.
