National television awards 2014: best tressed National Television Awards 2014: Best TressedThe National Television Awards 2014 took place at London's O2 arena last night and, as usual, the night saw the stars of the small screen showcase the best of their style on the red carpet. Soap and reality stars mingled with some of drama's biggest names and, as you would expect from such a mixed crowd, red-carpet styles ranged from elegant to edgy - with a bit of vintage thrown in for good measure, courtesy of Kelly Brook's revealing Ossie Clark gown. The night also saw TV's brightest debut some fabulous red carpet hair - and for once, it wasn't all about the glossy blow-dried curls. We had retro rolls, slicked-back straight styles and colour surprises - as well as, yes, the odd glossy, curly, blow-dry. The Jamie Stevens Hair team were in demand for glam hair style fixes and updos from hundreds of guests who visited the Star Treatment Area ahead of the 19th National Television Awards at The O2 Arena on Wednesday 22nd January 2014, before the hair team hit the red carpet themselves to watch the show. Senior Stylist, Jonathan Andrew at Jamie Stevens Hair identifies some of the key looks rocking the red carpet: National Television Awards 2014 - Jenna Louise Coleman Half Up/Down – Loving Doctor Who actress Jenna Louise Coleman’s effortless style which shows off her amazing features in a subtle, feminine way. Get the look... 1. Blow-dry hair smooth while maintaining as much texture as possible. 2. Step 2: Using ghd stylers, add some quick curls to give it more movement and brush out immediately to stop it setting. Take two sections from the front and, using the stylers, add movement towards the back, giving it a quick bend. 3. Lightly pin into place at the back underneath the crown to add shape to the look and use a comb to separate the fringe for a soft, tousled look. Finish with Matrix Hair Lock hairspray to hold. National Television Awards 2014 - Kelly Brook Asymmetric swept to one side – This is a really strong look that proved popular on the red carpet last night. I love the element of Hollywood glamour brought back with a modern twist with the likes of Kelly Brook, Rita Simons and Georgia May Foote wearing different versions of this look. Get the look... 1. Taking a diagonal section from in front of the crown on the side you want to be slicked back, spray some fixing spray on a dressing brush to take the hair back to the nape and put into a low ponytail to secure. 2. Using some styling irons, try curling inch sections away from the face pulling the stylers down to encourage the curl into more of a wave when dressing and continue until all the hair has been curled. 3. Starting at the bottom, brush the curls out into waves using an oval dressing brush, shaping the hair around the face into shape. 4. Hold the look in place with finishing spray and run Matrix Mix In Shine serum through the ends to create sparkling shine. National Television Awards 2014 - Abbey Clancy Long and tousled – You can’t underestimate the power of a great blow-dry and lots of girls were working this look at the NTA’s with a looser, youthful feel to the overall look as seen on the likes of Strictly Come Dancing winner Abbey Clancy and Eastenders star Jacqueline Jossa. Get the look... 1. A great blow-dry is the foundation so arm yourself with plenty of Matrix Go Big mousse to rough dry into the hair, a big round brush to give the hair as much root lift and concentrate root lift spray at the roots. 2. Use large ghd stylers to curl the hair into big curls and pin up onto the head until all sections are completed to maintain as much root lift as possible. 3. Starting at the bottom, unravel the curls and loosely brush out. For a smoother look continue to brush out the curls or for a more tousled look gently rouche the hair from the bottom up to create a textured finish and hold in place with hairspray. National Television Awards 2014 - Jessie Wallace hair Retro updos – Jessie Wallace brought vintage glamour back to the red carpet and I like that she went for the whole package from the outfit to the accessories, it really worked for her. Get the look... 1. Blow-dry in Matrix Go Big mousse and curl away from the face to give the hair some guts for the updo. 2. Starting with the fringe, use some styling irons to roll the hair under to start the vintage look. 3. Taking the top section from ear to ear, backcomb the roots a little to allow the hair to be pinned to the base and lightly curl the hair to make the rolls easier. 4. Split hair into 2 sections down the middle and taking one section, roll the hair around your finger to create a barrel shape towards the middle of the parting. Secure with pins along the bottom of roll to secure. 5. Repeat on other side 6. Take the remaining hair, sweep loosely to one side into a bun and finish with Matrix Surround Shine for a glossy finish and hairspray to hold. National Television Awards 2014 - Catherine Tyldesley hair Structured updo – I love how Catherine Tyldesley has brought elegance from the TV set the red carpet and this chic updo looks great with the dress and suits her face shape. Get the look... 1. Take a triangle section from the front and from the crown and pin them away. Now blow-dry both sides of the hair away from the face towards the back keeping as much lift as possible. 2. Take one side, smooth it back and pin into the nape. Then take the other side lapping it over the first one and pin into the other side. 3. Take the crown section, blow-dry with lift and smooth over the two side sections, pinning under to hide any grips showing. 4. Taking the front fringe section, blow-dry up and forward, then lightly backcomb the roots and apply hairspray to the roots using a hairdryer to dry in and hold in place. 5. Smooth back into the shape and spray to hold, lightly securing with pins if necessary. National Television Awards 2014 - Ashley Roberts hair Slicked back – This look has been seen on everyone from Kelly Osbourne to Hayden Panettiere recently. I do like this on Ashley with the sporty racer neck dress, though it’s not my favourite interpretation of this look. Get the look... 1. Using an oval dressing brush, blow-dry the hair flat towards the crown, flattening the hair as much as possible and do the same to both sides 2. Using a strong hold gel like Matrix Rock Solid quickly apply to the top and sides and brush back with a bristle brush before it dries. 3. Once in shape, use a hairdryer to set the look, maintaining some lift in the hair to avoid it looking too harsh and create more of a 3d texture throughout the ends with some straightening irons. National Television Awards 2014 - Fearne Cotton hair Blonde Bombshell – This is a great look for Fearne as the width complements her face shape and really complements the overall look. Extreme blonde is bang on trend for SS14 although I feel it was a little too yellow for her and I would have kept it to ashier tones of blonde. Get the look... 1. Blow-dry with Go Big Mousse to create body 2. Tong all the hair with large tongs to create a wave and brush out for a fluffy, textured finish 3. Finish with a dry hairspray such as Matrix Shape Maker and a little Mega Dust for added texture with a matte finish. National Television Awards 2014 - Sheridan Smith hair Red Alert – I love Sheridan’s new burnt copper tone and it’s a great way to warm up her cool complexion in the winter months, whilst enhancing her eyes. Get the look... 1. Wash hair with Matrix Volumatherapie Shampoo & Conditioner to create a good foundation for root lift. 2. Apply an apple sized amount of Matrix Biolage Full-Lift Volumizing Mousse and work through the root area and blast off with a hairdryer at the roots to achieve volume 3. Leaving out the fringe, section the hair from the temple to the crown on both sides and put hair into a high ponytail, backbrushing the top section and smoothing back along with the side sections. 4. Apply a generous amount of hairspray to secure the look and pin for extra security. 5. Use straightening irons to style the smooth, sleek fringe into place.
