Session stylist Matthew already has a flagship salon in the heart of Stratford-Upon-Avon, but when the opportunity arose to open a franchise in the spa - which attracts over 90,000 guests per year - it was a chance he couldn't miss. Although there had previously been a salon on the presmises, it was a world away from the vision Matthew had for a space that would encourage guests to extend their well-being visit to include the hair and scalp. Working with business partner and interior designer, Judy Reaves, Matthew transformed the space entirely to create a bright, luxurious, Art Deco inspired space. “Our aim was to marry the two concepts of a busy salon and calming spa,” says Matthew. “So that the feeling of tranquil luxury flowed throughout the guests’ time at the salon.” “We totally gutted the area and built the salon from scratch. We re-plastered all of the walls and fitted the area with plumbing and electrics. Further to this, rooms had to be built within the salon as well as a unique £15,000 flo-crete floor which was laid in arctic white with a slight sparkle. This process alone took two weeks.” White is the key colour for the salon, from that sparkling floor to white leather for the blow-dry bar and buttoned styling chairs. Metallic touches of silver and gold keep the Art Deco theme alive, but give a modern touch. The overall theme is a luxurious retreat, says Matthew, styled in lavish and modern surroundings with a hint of Art Deco. This lavish mood of the salon starts at reception – which doubles as a champagne bar, where guests can enjoy a drink as the wait. It was inspired by a bar that Matthew visited in LA. “Clients can sit and look through our cocktail inspired illustrated blow-dry menu,” he explains. “All of the looks are all named after cocktails – so the bar is actually the perfect place to get inspiration for your look!”

Matthew Curtis Hair: In Brief

Name: Matthew Curtis Hair Address: Hoar Cross Hall Spa Hotel, Maker Lane, Burton upon Trent, DE13 8QS Owner: Franchise of Matthew Curtis Size: 2,500sq ft Staff: 5 Styling stations: 11 Budget: £50,000 Financing: Self-financing from Hoar Cross Hall Spa Hotel Sources: Maletti, Coach House Design, Reaves Interiors (01789 266551) Is there anything you wouldn't choose again with hindsight?  I think a white floor is hard work to maintain and shows no mercy with hair and dirty shoes What was the best thing you did and the worst thing you did? The best thing was designing our own sofa. It would retail at £2,500 but we made it for £850. The worst thing was a chain curtain around the top part of the Retreat room. Unfortunately the wrong colour arrived and, as we only put it up the night before opening, I felt like I had to apologise for it on the day. Obviously it was a small, correctable situation but even the smallest of issues are magnified when going through the stresses of launching a new salon! BHBAwidgetEnter_V2
