Matrix destination fame 2014 winners announced The winners of Matrix Destination Fame 2014 have been announced, with three talented young hairdressers now going on to enjoy a 'year of fame'. Following online voting, 12 finalists were invited to London where judges Paul Falltrick, Hooker & Young, Matthew Batham from HJ and Albany Volker from Professional Hairdresser were on hand to identify the lucky winners. "The atmosphere was electric all day and ultimately, with such a high standard it was a tense moment as the winners were announced," said judge and mentor Paul Falltrick. "It was particularly exciting as a judge to be able to seek out the winner that I would go on to mentor myself. I was looking for more than skill. I wanted to see potential, someone that could progress and grow. Finally, I wanted to get a sense of depth in the presentation element of the day to demonstrate that the competitor had really thought about and rehearsed what their look was all about." The three grand prize winners for will now each enjoy a money-can't-buy year of prizes, including one-to-one guidance from mentors in both hairdressing and the press to provide unparalleled advice covering all areas of the industry. And the winners are... Matrix Destination Fame 2014 Winners Announced - Matthew Gavin Matthew Gavin, Christian Wiles Hairdressing, Northampton Matthew is no stranger to Destination Fame having entered the competition every year since it began! A finalist in 2012, he narrowly lost out - to his girlfriend, Ashleigh Hodges! Now it's his time to shine as he embarks on his year of fame, with Ashleigh as his model. Taking inspiration from colours seen in nature, Matthew used new Matrix Lacquers to create a spectrum of blue and green shades which he likened to an oil slick in water. Using an intricate free-hand technique, he used tiny paintbrushes to layer a shine line throughout an immaculately executed classic bob. Matthew will be mentored by HJ and Jamie Stevens. Speaking about his win Matthew said; "When I first entered Destination Fame I was really inexperienced but it enabled me to observe other people’s work and focus on areas that I needed to improve on. It’s been great insight and each year I’ve upped my game. I hope my success demonstrates how important it is to keep trying because you really can win." Matrix Destination Fame 2014 Winners Announced - Hattie Stokes Hattie Stokes, Theo Georgiou, Knowle Hattie sought her inspiration from the world of celebrity, referencing the muted pastels spotted on Kelly Osbourne and Poppy Delevingne as her starting point for her winning look. With a custom mix of colours created using So Reds in the Matrix Color Sync collection, Hattie’s gamine crop featured a beautiful blend of pretty pastels through the front sections. Hattie will be mentored by Creative Head and Hooker&Young and is relishing the opportunity to learn from the talented duo; She says: "Last year’s final was overwhelming and the buzz of meeting Errol Douglas and the other judges at the academy was like I had already won. I was devastated not to win, but after speaking to Errol I knew what I had to do to improve. I love the Hooker & Young aesthetic and can’t wait to work with them at the winners shoot - and I feel especially lucky to have two mentors." Matrix Destination Fame 2014 Winners Announced - Erika Jackson Erika Jackson, H20, Bolton For Erika, success at Destination Fame came as a huge surprise as it was the first hairdressing competition she had ever entered! With her stunning sunset-inspired look, she wanted to present a seamless flow of colour on a canvas of immaculately-conditioned long hair. Working on the theory that she would have more hair to showcase, her vision is a masterclass in symmetry showing great depth to her technical abilities. Erika will be mentored by Professional Hairdresser and Paul Falltrick and said: "I was really happy to see that Paul was on the judging panel as I’m a huge fan of his work and believe that he has a really genuine passion for education. The opportunity to be mentored is the reason I entered Destination Fame. I love the 'no rules' aspect of the competition and felt that is allowed the finalists to truly express their creativity." The winner’s next stop on the year of fame is to prepare a moodboard ahead of their prized photoshoot. With a brief to 'create six cool and current looks to bring a top secret Matrix project to life’ and a hotline to their mentors, it’s time to harness their creative mojo and take a leap into their incredible winning year.
