Mahogany create illusions with optec

Mahogany-main.jpgHas it ever occurred to you that creating a great hairstyle is just a series of optical illusions to create shape and movement?

Mahogany spotted the optical illusions in hair shapes and worked with them to create their Optech collection of two distinct styles that play with curves, asymmetry and geometric shapes to create balance and movement.

Demonstrated in a two hour Salon International Seminar the creative team created a variety of hair cuts that were interpretations of the Optech's two key looks.

"Optical art works with repetition of a line to create the illusion of a shape," says Richard Thompson, international creative director.

"This is what we do with hair. In this collection we are working with a line and moving and bending it."

As the team each gave their own interpretation of the styles, Simon Pinto, academy principal explained the importance of adopting styles for your environment.

"Whenever you learn a new collection, you always have to grab onto it, work with it and then adapt it to your workplace and the individual that is sitting in front of you," he says.

UK creative director Colin Greaney adds: "The idea is that there isn't any set rule. The section pattern is an inspiration and a guideline, but if you want to you can alter them for your styles."

Like the cuts, colour was added using two techniques,  geo-curve and geo-wave, that were inspired by 'the father of opti art' Victor Vasarely.

"Colour was really important and like the lines, it was all about repetitive patterns and juxtaposition of strong colours being placed alongside each other," head of the technical team Ceira Fagan explains.

"They used very strong colours to emphasise the contrast, which is what we have done with our hairstyles and you can see that it really adds movement."

"That is what we have done and you will see that the strong colours next to each other to add movement."
