Autumn is officially here and what better way to mark the occasion than a colour change.

We've been crushing on Queen of Colour, Cheryl Fernandez-Versini's new chocolate locks.

We spoke to Tasha Stevens, Colour Director at Jamie Stevens Hair, for her top tips on achieving this season's must-have hue.

‘It’s that time of year when most of my clients start asking me about changing their hair colour for the winter.

For me there are three vital things that clients need to remember when considering a drastic colour change.

1. They're going to look very different, so encourage them to adapt their make up to suit their new hair colour as it can have an affect on skin tone. This isn’t a one step process, it can often take two or more appointments in salon in order to achieve the perfect colour. This is also a great opportunity to recommend professional haircare products to clients to help prevent colour fade.

2. So many clients ask for a cool natural brown, this is impossible to achieve on hair that has been lightened as hair colour needs to be a warm shade of brown for the colour to be able to sit on top of the blonde. Clients often ask for natural browns with no red or orange, again this is impossible for stylists to achieve as the pigment needs to be injected back into the hair for the colour to hold. Don’t panic, explain that the warm brown won’t be forever, as hair absorbs the new tone they'll be left with gorgeous shiny, luxurious colour.

3. If your client is a bit iffy about a colour change, encourage them to try on wigs. Kylie Jenner has been experimenting with wigs a lot recently and I think it’s a really fun and sensible way of trying out different hair colours to see what works. This will give clients a chance to see how their skin tone will change depending on hair colour. Many people think that going darker will make them look paler, in actual fact, a darker shade will add warmth to the skin tone and emphasise eye colour. It just takes time to adapt to the change.’
