L'oreal colour trophy men's image award winner talks haircuts and hair idols L'Oreal Colour Trophy Men's Image Winner 2013 This year’s L’Oréal Profesionnel Men’s Image Award winner, Paul Caladine of Saks, Doncaster, offers an insight into his world. How important are men to your business? Men are increasingly looking to invest in their grooming regime and experimenting with trends and colour, they often need advice and inspiration as to what would suit them or the looks and products that are coming up so professional input is always welcomed. We ensure are male clients receive the same in depth consolation, relaxing backwash experience and build the trust with them so that they feel comfortable to come by anytime without feeling intimidated. What do you love about men’s hairdressing? Men’s cutting can be so much more experimental; the varied structures can be so much fun to work with. Males are adaptable and enthusiastic to try new styles and products. Men’s trends are really inspiring and can be found in fashion, music, film and sport the ability to recreate and adapt those using my ideas is always exciting, and the positive influence I can have on my clients when they leave with a strong steal inner confidence and sharpness is rewarding. What did you want to achieve with your entry to the Men’s Image Award? The look we wanted to create needed to remain masculine and wearable, we knew that the colour needed to show our technical ability but not be obvious or over styled in the finish. Although we read and re-read the brief we knew we need to produce a complete look that we would always be proud of and ensure we get the recognition for having strong ideas and skills in this area of hairdressing. Why do you think it was a winner? There were so many talented hairdressers during the L’Oréal Colour Trophy Grand Final that we just didn’t know if we would win. The only thing that we were certain of was that we had fulfilled the brief and we were 100% happy with overall look. What make a good men’s hair cut? The cut should always be bespoke to that particular client I ensure I take time to think about hair type, face shape and bone structure before I start. My ideal men’s cut is fashion led with a clean structure and finished with good tailoring. How important was colour to the overall look? colour is always important - it can change the look massively, it can complement the skin and hair cut. On our winning look we opted for natural colour placing using slight speckles of different tones with a reflective finish within a strong polished structure. The colour accentuated the cut and style finish yet wasn’t over powering or distracting. Will colour become bigger in the men’s market? As we see stronger more polished shapes in cutting techniques, colour will be natural and subtle and as shapes shatter with added texture colour will become high impact to highlight texture. What trends will we see in men’s hair in the next few months? Men are embracing their natural textures curls and waves and moving away from the traditional side parting working with central partings and opting to move away from waxes or gels towards products such as mousses for styling to increase volume and movement. Who do you think are the men’s trendsetters whose hairstyles will be influencing what male clients ask for? David Beckham continues to lead the way and Ryan Gosling always stands out for his diverse hair styles, he has a great look that is easily adapted to our male clients.
