Katy Perry is one of the biggest-selling female artists of recent times and is also the ambassador for ghd. Here, she talks about her style, ambitions and working with the styling brand...

HJ: Why did you get involved with ghd?
KP:  I was really excited because I'm always interested in changing my style and keeping it fresh. When I was approached to be the face of ghd, I looked at the range of products and thought they were very innovative, from the hot pink flat iron to their work with David LaChapelle. It's a fashion-forward, spontaneous and bold product, and that's something I wanted to be associated with.

HJ: What was it like working with David LaChapelle on the ghd shoot?
KP: It was a highlight of my career so far. I grew up with his iconic photos and music videos, and I never thought I would have the opportunity to work with him, so I was really excited. The shoot was amazing and very relaxed because he's really good fun, but professional at the same time. He's so talented, and you see that in his photos. They're timeless.

HJ: You were introduced to the ghd styler by your own hairdresser - what did you think?
KP: My hairdresser was using a hot pink flat iron, and I had never seen one before. I like using a flat iron because it's an easy way to look like you're fresh out of a salon.

HJ: The ghd shoot was based on bygone decades. If you could have been alive in any other decade which would you choose?
KP: I've always loved the 1940s, from the pin-up girls to Stepford Wives - that era has a timelessness and classic appeal. Women were well-manicured, proper and prim, and even though they weren't quite as independent as we are now, they were neatly packaged and presented themselves perfectly.

HJ: Which is your favourite look from the ghd shoot?
KP: It would have to be the 1950s classic look because it's something I've done before, and I know I can do well. The 1980s look was hilarious; it was a really bold move, but I had fun with it. I'm even using it in an upcoming music video, which is going to be really exciting.

HJ: You're an inspiration to women around the world; what advice would you give them about being a successful and confident woman?
KP: It's about developing who you are inside first and foremost, and once that is sorted, you can play around with different products and styles. I believe in integrity, respect and independence. I can be a feminist without being a man hater.

HJ: What or who are the influences behind your own personal style?
KP: There's a varied range of women who have inspired my style, both fictional and non-fictional. I have even been influenced by cartoon characters too, like Judy Jetson, Betty Boop and Wonder Woman. And, of course, real people such as Dita Von Teese, Daphne Guinness, Agyness Deyn and Chloe Sevigny.

HJ: What is your favourite hairstyle?
KP: I have two favourite looks. I like to wear a high, 1980s ponytail, à la Madonna, and I like to sport a neat 1940s set inspired by Veronica Lake.

HJ: What are your hair and beauty top tips?
KP: Sleep is the key to a fresh look - eight hours is a must for me. Bronzer and a slick of mascara go a long way. I love to experiment with mascara; blue mascara gives you a whole different look.
