Jamie stevens’ x factor diary – great british songbook week hannah-xfactor-hairAs official hairdresser on The X Factor, Jamie Stevens and his team have been responsible for creating all of the contestants live looks – and we’ve been going behind the scenes with him. Here, he shares his latest backstage diary…
This week, I’ve been prepping my British Hairdresser of the Year nominee show for HJ’s British Hairdressing Awards in between working at the salon, doing our weekly creative meeting with the X Factor and working on an X Factor-inspired glam hair photographic shoot for S Magazine, which will be out before Christmas. sam-xfactor-hair It was Great British Songbook week on the show this week and Sam Bailey was singing a classic Leona Lewis ballad wearing a classy red dress, so we worked with a beautiful but simple undone style that really suits her and her personality. Each week, she is looking better and her confidence grows; she is unstoppable! Hannah was wearing a very glamorous long gold lamé dress so we kept her hair soft and wavy but brought it to the side and pinned it loosely up to keep it looking young and sexy. Hannah is a such a fun, lively personality and great to work with because she’s up for doing anything with her hair, so the Jamie Stevens 'hair room' was sad to see her go. She is an amazing vocalist though, so I see big things for her. tamera-x-factor-hair Now we’re in week 7 I wanted to shake things up a bit with Tamera. With so many celebrities going for the chop - from all the Jennifers (Lawrence, Aniston and Hudson) to Miley Cyrus, Glee’s Kristin Chenoweth, Pamela Anderson and Jessie J - going short is firmly back on trend. Tamera has a gorgeous face shape and bone structure and so I wanted to really emphasise this with a shorter hair look, whilst leaving her enough length to feel comfortable with. I cut her hair into a graduated layered bob which is inverted so it’s longer at the front to hug and emphasise her jaw line and it really seemed to work with the high neck two piece that she wore on Saturday. Tamera-long-to-short As we’re hurtling towards the final, tensions are flying high and the pressure is immense, so it was tough to see Tamera trip up with her vocals and the reaction to it, but she’s a star and as always, we’ll do all we can to make her feel comfortable and keep a smile on her face by bringing the fun factor in the hair room. In salons up and down the country, hairstylists do so much more than cut hair on a daily basis; we often play the role of confidante and it’s exactly the same in my X Factor hair room. I remember watching the first series of X Factor and it only feels like yesterday, so I can’t believe how quickly 10 years have gone. Saturday provided a great opportunity to celebrate with some of the people that I’ve been working with for the last three years before an even bigger celebration tonight – the night we’ve all been waiting for – HJ’s British Hairdressing Awards! Like the X Factor, nerves are running high in the Stevens household as we get nearer to the big reveal of who will be the winners in tonight’s ceremony at the Grosvenor House Hotel – both myself and my wonderful sister Tasha Stevens are up for awards. Win or lose, every single nominee should be hugely proud of their achievements as the standard is incredibly high this year. I wish the best of luck to everyone that has been nominated and look forward to seeing you all later tonight to celebrate all that is good and great about our industry!
