Hairdressing's cowboy businessmen make me mad!

Hairdressing's cowboy businessmen make me mad!

There are lots of great things that can be said about the hairdressing industry and there are lots of very talented people, both from a creative and a business point of view.

However, like any industry, there are also a lot of people that don't always play by the rules and give the business a bad name.

So why am I writing this now? This morning, I've been going through my emails and forum posts and these are a couple of the queries that have come through to our legal eagle, David Wright...

My daughter has worked in a salon for 4.5 years, the owner has decided to pursue other interests and is closing the business on March 20 2010. He has terminated my daughter's employment with immediate effect only paying her wages up to now. She has never been issued with a contract nor has she received a payslip over the last 12 months, nor a P60. What can she do please?

Can anyone advise me, the salon I work in has got to close half day due to all electrical power being shut down by the electricity company. All staff have been told to take the half day as holiday or without pay. Surely this cant be right? Appointments have been cancelled for that afternoon. Should the staff be paid regardless?

The whole thing makes my blood boil - can anyone genuinely believe that this is an acceptable way for a reputable business to treat its employees?

And that's not the worst of it. Check out this query that came in a few weeks ago...

My employer has been deducting my pension contributions from my salary monthly, but not paying it into my scheme. This has been going on now for some years.

If you're interested, you can read David's reply here , but the long and the short of it is that this isn't acceptable and if you are in doubt about the way you are being treated use your voice - drop David a line or get in touch with citizens advice.

It's not okay and the longer you stay quiet, the longer these cowboys will get away with it and the longer the reputation of this fantastic industry will be jeopardised.
