Former theatres makes for a dramatic london salon

It's always a challenge to maintain tried-and-tested interior design concepts while retaining original features, but this has been achieved at Rush Hair on The Strand, London.

In terms of original features, Rush Hair was spoilt for choice. The space used to be the ornate ticket hall of the Vaudeville Theatre, with elements dating from the 1870s when the theatre opened.

One advantage was that Rush Hair had previously worked with the contractor, Sand Shopfitters, on numerous sites, so there was no problem explaining the vision for the salon and working closely together to achieve it.

Long, narrow spaces are a trademark of Rush Hair, and the former ticket hall certainly fell into this category. The monochrome colour scheme is a signature look for the company, as is the abundance of mirrors on either side of the salon, creating the perception of space. The reception area also follows the Rush Hair formula of polished black materials for the flooring and reception desk, with a plethora of retail shelving.

What makes Rush Hair on The Strand different are the original features, which complement the modern interior as much as they contrast with it. The most dramatic original feature is the ceiling which, apart from a coat of white paint, has been left unchanged from the theatre's heyday.

Says Rush Hair's international creative director, Stell Andrew: "The theme of old and new is apparent, with the original features of the building enhanced and complemented by the contemporary furniture and fittings."
