Social media and social networking are two of the most important aspects of any ambitious business. Not having a good social media presence is like not having a website - you just can't do without it. If executed correctly, social media can do wonders for your business and salon.

Improve your search engine ranking
Actively participating in social media can make the difference between being listed at the top of a search engine's results or way down on forgotten page number 32.

Every friend, website link, re-tweet, recommendation and comment you post can improve your ranking - a better rank means a better online presence and, ultimately, an increase in click-through-rate for you and your soon-to-be thriving salon.

Widen your geographical footprint
Social media is an internet-wide tool that, unlike print media, is not limited by the boundaries of your local area; advertise on it, and the world gets to know. Facebook recently announced its 700-millionth user - growing at a rate of more than 10 million users per month - and with an additional 200 million tweeters currently worldwide, this is a market not to be missed. By networking through these platforms, you have the opportunity to reach a wider audience, seeking out key connections in neighbouring towns and cities. When you have been at it for a while, your network can grow. One cleverly placed tweet could have viral consequences; spreading your salon's brand like wildfire.

Build strong client relationships
The best stylists are known for their friendly interactions. Having a good social media presence allows you to continue building this relationship outside the realms of your salon and even into their homes - cementing an even stronger bond along with their loyalty.

Open press and media opportunities
Forward-thinking salons are always looking for publicity, and journalists are always looking for interesting content. Connecting online with industry magazines, local newspapers, radio stations and personalities can benefit both you and the media; it is therefore very worthwhile nurturing these relationships. There are many ways you can use social media to do so, but often the more inventive ways are the most successful.

Increase client base and sales
Over time your network will grow leaps and bounds from a select group of industry peers and clients, to a wider collection of specialists in related industries that share common interests.
Your clients will get to grips with your online activity and begin to make their own connections via your network as new introductions from a wider area are made. Eventually, your client base can continue to grow as far as your ambitions will allow, increasing sales along the way.

Social media deserves commitment
Executed poorly, or left dormant after losing your initial enthusiasm, and these powerful search engines will consider your move as an attempt to cheat the system - having a detrimental effect upon your trade. Executed correctly however, it can help your salon hit targets and exceed goals.
