Celebrity plaits and braids for summer 2011 HJI Hearts logo.bmpEve-braid-roll.jpgPlaits and braids are a summer staple and with the right styling can be transformed from a bohemian beach babe solution to a polished red carpet updo. Celebrities including Blake Lively and Diane Kruger love this look - find out how to get it here.

Whether worn long, loose and dishevelled or tight, taut and tidy, the plait is a perennial favourite. Switch the look from schoolgirl to supermodel-worthy by slinging over one shoulder for a nonchalant finish and loosening tendrils to frame the face.

Here are our celebrity favourites - and the expert opinions on what works and what doesn't.

Blake Lively
"Worn just a little loose around the edges, this side plait is the perfect red-carpet style and Blake wears it well. She always rocks the effortless chic look and this is no exception. It's youthful, feminine and a real statement for the season. I could even see this look going down well at festivals with T-shirt, jeans and a pair of wellies. Beautiful as ever, the Green Lantern and Gossip Girl starlet is on to a winner!"

Eve
"Eve's bold plait leans strongly towards the tribal trend as seen on the Missoni catwalk for Spring/Summer. The extremity of length gives the look a really powerful feel, but the overall style is softened with elegant, feminine make-up. The incorporation of the roll-top side pleat gives a fresh, innovative and edgy feel, making this style the perfect look for the first lady of rap."

Diane Kruger
"I absolutely love this style. We have seen a lot of the fishtail plait in the last few months, but Diane's look takes it to the next level. To achieve this style start by tonging the hair and pinning to one side. Pull and twist small sections across to create a basket weave effect, leaving it loose to maintain width. Next, create a tighter fishtail-style plait right through the ends and finish by adding pins to secure and add effect."

Nicole Kidman
"Nicole's fighting the sleek and smooth red-carpet trend with a gorgeous, dishevelled side plait that frames her face perfectly. She's opted for a classic style, but has added a modern edge with matte texture, some volume and height on top for added glamour. Nicole's boho look is accentuated with hooped earrings and a healthy glow. A plait is a really versatile look - easily adaptable to all face shapes by changing a client's parting or creating a sleeker version to suit their lifestyle."
