Business and creative split

The issue of work/life balance is one that many people wrestle with, regardless of which industry or career they have chosen; but in the professional hairdressing industry there is often the dilemma in regards to how you split your time between business and creative activity.

From a creative point of view, ensuring you are up to date with the latest trends, techniques and technological advancements is key and allowing yourself the time, and freedom to be inspired and let your artistic skills continue to develop is essential.

But managing a team and salon business also requires absolute commitment to ensure growth, whether it be single or double digit that you are aiming for. High performing teams are the lifeblood of any hairdressing business and they are not formed by accident. Training, motivation, fair and consistent management and a clear strategy that is understood, and most importantly, believed in equally by all allows the entire team to understand and represent the promises of the brand they represent daily. Add to all of this the pressure of running a busy column and it is easy to see why prioritising is not always easy.

Taking a sabbatical - whether it be creative or business focused is a luxury that you may not feel you can afford; but taking time out to see the bigger picture is essential for growth both personally and for the business.
