Anthony mascolo's career in pictures

Innovative, creative, imaginative and inspiring are just some of the words to describe Anthony Mascolo. He is one of the most revered hairdressers of his generation and over his 30 year career has created looks that have been copied worldwide by hairdressers and clients.

He is as well-known for his imagery as his hair styling. His dynamic vision has taken hairdressing and product development to a new level, constantly raising the standards and pushing the creative boundaries. Here Anthony talks about some of the images that have defined his career.

< br />Bobs

Graffiti

Couture

Bobs "Here are a pair of bobs. The one featuring the flag was for an American magazine. I used the Union Jack as I am patriotic. If I took all the bobs I have created I would have more than 100 different images. These bobs are worked on wigs, which is easier and more versatile. Working on wigs gives you a chance to be more creative - you can add hair to it, you can cut it into shapes - it can take your work to another level."

Graffiti "We created graffiti hair and make-up and added more graphics on top of it. The picture then became part of the graphic (above centre).

Couture "When we launched TIGI, I thought it was about hair and a product. I soon realised it was about being as creative and as strong as you can be. This shot matched the clothes with the hair, in different textures. We created cobweb-like hair and a hair hat to hold it all together. It has a very couture feel."

1978

Birdlike

1978 "This shot is from 1978 and is called The Veil. We were working through the night on the actress Lorraine Chase, using a weaving technique to create detail and intricacy. I was just starting to get excited about hair and photography. It was a time when everyone was experimenting - Robert Lobetta, Trevor Sorbie and Andrew Collinge - it was the start of capturing hair and immortalising it through photography."

Birdlike "This was also shot for an American magazine, on location at an old embassy in London. It had been left derelict and the walls are crumbling, but the colours were amazing. The model perched on the sofa like a bird and Pat and Georgina Mascolo did make-up using feathers. The model had short hair, so we played with it to mimic wings and feathers."

Lenses

Mystique

Transient

Lenses "I wanted to work with lenses to highlight lips, eyes and bits of hair for a show. It didn't work, but as a photograph it's interesting. Hair and photography is all about experimenting and having fun and that is what I try to do."

Mystique "I was working with a photographer called Pete Underwood on our Mystique collection. This was a very graphic collection. A retoucher who made one side dark and the image took on a different effect to the original photograph. I realised I could take photographs one step further, retouching for a stronger, more graphic image. This was a turning point. I realised through photograph manipulation I could captured exactly what I wanted."

Transient "This is from our Transient collection in 1992. For a long time hairdressers had been scrunching and styling and had forgotten how to blow-dry. So, we created this collection to motivate them. We wanted our hairdressers to blow-dry not because they had to but because they wanted to. This collection excited hairdressers and clients. At that time blow-dries were seen as old fashioned, but this collection changed minds."
