Andrew barton: why i withdrew from british hairdresser of the year

As you might have read, I have decided to withdraw my nomination from this year's British Hairdresser of the Year competition.

This was not a decision that I took lightly because when I received my nomination I was honoured and really excited. However after serious thought I realised that I couldn't put in the time and dedication that the award requires.

British Hairdresser of the Year nominees have to put together a photo collection of eight images. It is not just a case of turning up and taking styling the hair for the photographs. It would have involved at least a two day shoot and countless hours working on the concept, developing the idea and choosing the right models and I knew that there simply are not enough hours for me to do that.

I didn't think that on the night of the awards I would be able to say to myself that I was proud of my entry and I couldn't sit their thinking that I had let myself and all the people who had supported me down.

I want it to be clear that I am not being snobbish and I am not shunning british hairdressing or the awards and I really hope that I will be nominated again in the future and give it the time that it deserves.

Since winning the award in 2006 it has been a really exciting time for me. Lots has happened professionally and my career has really moved onwards. Part of this involves lots of overseas work as an ambassador for British Haidressing.

As part of this, I'm off to Asia for a whistlestop tour of seven countries in three weeks; then when I get back, I am going straight to the Ukraine. Saks are opening a salon in Dubai and our education in Italy has really taken off so I need to be involved in that plus my own brand, which is going from strength to strength, has some new products being added to the range.

I hope that this helps people to understand my decision and I wish the other nominees the very best of luck. Finally I'd also like to say thank you to all of the hairdressers who have been in touch with me to offer their support and say that it was a brave decision.
