I am 18 years old and have been hairdressing as part of an apprenticship for around two years now. I attended my local college for around 17 months but as time went on i didnt feel like i was getting the right training from my training provider or the salon i was working for. I felt like i was being marked off on things i didnt feel i was fully trained on. So i decided to leave and as my salon wouldnt change my training provider. I recently moved to another salon and training provider in February this year, although to lack of business my boss had to lay me off it is June now and my training provider has not been able to find me work in my area. Everytime i try and get in contact with the women who handles the recruitment i seem to be getting fobbed off as she never rings back. I recently attended an interview for a college in the Manchester area and found out that the goverment only give you a maxium of 18 months or so to finish your course. I have exceeded the time limit and may have to pay for my training im really stuck and not sure how to go about getting my qualification finished if anyone has had any similar experiences or have any advice on how to go about this please write back.

Hi Rachell

This is a really tricky one to advise on. My only suggestion is that rather trying to make contact via phone or email is that you visit your trianing provider in person, not neccessarily the Recruitment specialist but the head of the college or such other. Maybe they'll be able to offer you more guidance.#

Wishing you lots of luck.

The time your allocated is I think 76 weeks to complete your training, but you can be suspended from training for between 3/6 months depending on circumstances. To stay on a course you need a minimum of 16 hours a week, you need to speak to whoever is in charge of the department at the training provider ie.head of hair faculty, the provider only gets paid if you finish your qualification so it is in their interest to see you. At the very least you need someone to look at your portfolio and log book to see how far along you are and whether it is feasable for you to continue. Your training provider is also able to extend your time to allow you to complete your course as you have been hampered due to no fault of your own. Avoidence of hinderances are built into the nvq standards and so your training provider has a duty to help  you. You also mentioned that you didn't feel you were being trained up to a good standard, again the provider only gets paid when you finish your course! but to give them the benefit of the doubt your initial training is only meant to be to a basic standard, your first year on the job properly is when you really learn everything inside out, but you never stop learning and with this your confidence will grow.

If you struggle with the training provider you can contact the examining body, city & guilds or VTCT, your log book /registration card will tell you which one your with, also try your local careers office in the job centre as the last thing they want is another person joining the dole queue in the current climate.

Let me know how you get on, hope this is of some help and start phoning tomorrow 9am as once these institutions go into exam mode no one answers the phones!

Hi I am also 18 and am looking at different training options available to me.

I have looked at many courses and narrowed down two that i like. The one difference between them is one of the courses is £1000 more expensive and what i get for that is 4 weeks longer and a nvq level 2 at the end.

People i have spoke to have told me when looking for a job as a barber the nvq is not essential. only that i can cut hair well, have a good personality and appearance. In your experiences is this true? is there many barbers without nvqs that can get jobs? and will it cause me any problems not having an nvq?

Thanks for your time. I look forward to hearing your responses.
