Watching from the sidelines, I've found all the debate about whether you would rather be a stylist in a top salon (such as Urban Retreat in Harrods) or an owner/manager of a local salon fascinating. You all seem to be very divided so I thought it would be interesting to run a poll to see where the majority of you stand.

As a career path, would you most like to:

  • Manage a small salon (66.7%)
  • Work in a huge, glitzy super-salon (22.2%)
  • Be a freelance (mobile) hairdresser (11.1%)
  • Total Votes: 9

I think that for any progressive person the glitz and glamour of being a stylist in a top salon will wear off. The more you do the more is expected of you.

Managing, loving and growing a business is a real challenge and one that will give far greater rewads and job satifaction when you nurture your "your baby" and see it grow. Also one of the most rewarding things you will ever experience is the joy of watching your staff blossom under your leadership.

Have a look at this video of a "Saturday Girl" talking with admiration about her salon owner. Massive pride for the salon owner she is talking about. Have a hankie ready.....

The other old saying is also true I believe.

"Rather be a big fish in a small pond"
