Hair Icons 2009!

We recently asked top hairdressers who their style icons for 2009 were. Answers included Dannii Minogue, Rihanna and Lady Gaga.

I'll be working on a celebrity style feature in HJ soon and want to find out who your style icon of 2009 is. You might get an idea from the HJi hearts.. that have been featured throughout the year or there might be someone unexpted that you think has looked amazing in 2009.

Please let us know! The top suggestions will be added to the celebrity style feature.

Has anyone been having problems with Lifestyle TV?

Hi all,

I am looking for salon owners who have had a similar problem with a company called Lifestyle TV.

I had Lifestyle TV installed in the salon Last May 08 and they promised to pay off my old contract with my previous TV company. They didn't do this and I have ended up having to pay for 2 systems.

They have theTV's inside the mirrors and they look good but I have never received the service that they promised and now have decided to wash my hands of the company. I am seeking legal advice and I know there are salons out there having similar problems so I would love to know if anyone else is or if anyone knows of any salons with the system in.

I would really appreciate it.

HAS ANYBODY HAD TROUBLE WITH VISION TV? I SIGNED UP WITH THEM TO BUY THEIR EQUIPMENT WITH PROMISED REVENUE FOR ADVERTISING BUT THEY NEVER SOLD ANY ADVERTISING AND LEFT ME WITH A BILL FOR THE EQUIPMENT THAT PREVIOUSLY I HAD FOR NOTHING.

I WAS SIGNED UP TO A BLANK DOCUMENT AND THEREFORE REFUSED TO PAY THE LEASING FROM ADMIRAL THE LEASING COMPANY WHO ARE NOW TAKING ME TO COURT FOR UNPAID FEES.

I WOULD LOVE TO HEAR FROM ANYONE ELSE WHO HAS HAD THE SAME PROBLEM.

Hi,

A client of mine is getting married in November, she has long fine hair and wants BIG hair....i think like marge simpson were her words!!!! I remember yrs ago using some sort of foam thing then dressing the hair round it???!!!! Does anyone know of anything similar or where i can get this from as my wholesalers only do bun rings!!!

What do you guys think? There is an interesting article and posts after the article. We should all get involved with some feedback for the elle author fom the professional community, as no-one has just yet, it is just non-stylists ! Personally, I have had clients say they are getting it cut but knowing their man will hate it / on the other hand I have had clients being marched in by their fellas for a radical style change! even had some guys watching a bit too avidly!

Hi everyone,

Ive been a salon owner for nearly thirty years and in that time have never known a hot water system that i can rely on - UNTIL NOW, so i wanted to let you know, especially if you are about to start your own business, Get a Salon Master system, Ive had one now for just over a year after seeing them at Salon International and the biggest test was at xmas, well im pleased to report that it was problem free, the first time ive never worried about the water ever!

Hi everyone, Matthew, News Editor of HJ here.

I just wondered how many salon owners on here have been asked to register with their local council's Environmental health Officers. I was under the impression it was only salons that offered invasive procedures that needed to do this, but I received a call from a reader today saying her local council is demanding all salons and barbers in the area register at a cost of £118 per salon plus £86 per stylists.

Is this normal?

I'd greatly appreciate any feedback you can give me.

King's new clothes

I have been argueing on this with my spouse for several times and for a long. Now I want to hear your opinions on this matter.

My spouse claims that nowadays women have fooled, when they make a visit to a hairdresser. He says that nowadays beautifull is ugly, and ugly is beautiful. After my last visit to hairdresser, he said: "your hair is now worse messed up than before". In order to preserve the peace and tranquillity, I am going to change my hair style to a more feminine one; a style from 60's, 70's or early 80's.

He thinks that the fairytail on "King's new clothes" is not a fairytail but reality when speaking about women's modern hairstyles. We are missing a truthful speaker on this issue. How is it? What would you say?

Hi Everybody,

Just thought i'd tell you that i found a company who specialises in salon water heaters.

They are called "Salon Master" and ive had mine now for the last 12 months when i opened my salon and its been wonderful from day one. So anyone who needs a water heater, dont hesitate to get one, the're very helpful and not expensive either, Just wish i'd know about them years ago!

GHD's are officially going to sit beside Babyliss and Remington and sell on the high street!

I started a forum a while ago when I heard ghd were selling on QVC - I just want all salon owners to see this - BEFORE they order any more stock!

Looks like they've offically decided to sell on the highstreet!!!! Guess our support through the years has been forgotten and those over at ghd will turn there back on everybody who made them who they were!

I just want to say how disgusted I was too find out you can buy ghds on qvc! Did everybody know this??

I only got told yesterday by one of my clients who'd seen them a couple times. Supposably they have a ghd hour or something like that where you can buy the irons and get free products! To top it off My junior stylist chipped in to tell me her mum had just bought some from Boots the other week!!

I feel like an absolute idiot - am I being a fool in thinking that ghds were meant to be salon exclusive! Y on earth are people going to come here and buy them off me when they can get them watching tv with some products thrown in!

I feel really let down - I turned a blind eye a few years ago when the chavvy barbers 5 doors down started selling them but qvc!!! I draw the line at this!

Is anybody else feeling disappointed like me - are they selling anywhere else?? Seems Im really out of the loop - I didn't have a clue!

Can anyone help me with projected earnings that were lost by the failings of a publicity company?

Hi. This looks like a tricky one: our salon contracted with an events management company to provide hairdressing service for a fashion show, in return for a number of publicity opportunities including a presence on their website, TV exposure and an introduction/interview with the editor of Black Beauty magazine. We provided the services but they failed dismally to provide what they had offered, etc. etc. Our solicitor says it is possible to claim from them for consequential loss, loss of opportunity, whatever. But we need to be able to put forward a figure based on the experience of other salons - or publicity companies for that matter - reflecting what income has been generated for a salon by exposure on websites, TV, prestigious magazines like Black Beauty. Does anyone have please any figures or documentation which they would be willing to share with us, and which we could use to lever a claim?

Hairdressers only good for small talk...

This morning, as I was reading through my Daily Mirror - never let it be said that I am anything but a classy lady! - I was really shocked to read this belittling of the the hair industry by one of their columnists.

Two years ago Nicky Clarke received an OBE for services to hairdressing and Vidal Sassoon has just been given a CBE. Which means that putting a bad pun like 'fringe benefits' on a shop sign and asking a customer "do you just want a trim?" or "been away yet this year?" while keeping one eye on a pensioner's demi-wave is worthy of a medal from the head of state. What about services to corn removing?

This morning we have heard the sad news that Guy Mascolo, co-founder of TONI&GUY, has died of a heart attack.

The TONI&GUY brand has played a huge role in so many hairdressers' lives so if you have been touched by Guy and his work and would like to play a tribute to him it would be lovely to share them here.
