have a style its already been seen and accepted by the public. They seem to
copy the masses and then the masses copy them. It's like a dog that’s biting its tail. We just go round in circles. When models and actors take a "New” style it suits them
better as it’s their prerogative. We hairdressers should be ahead of actors.
They should get inspiration from us hairdressers about their hair, not the other
way around. I think I get inspiration from Contemporary art galleries, as there
we see what the modern artist is up to. Our
job is part of modern art. Try doing
a style that is from another era and see what happens. I remember when the Mullet was the best thing since sliced bread and the soulder pads to go with the haircut.

Maybe a trip to Berlin to see the Bauhaus Museum as the styles of today have
come from this direction even if that’s really a thing of the 1930s. A trip to Paris
and a seat at a coffee shop for the day watching people go by. Earler this month
I went to the Chicago and got inspiration from going to the museums and art galleries. Inspiration is for the sole not the eyes.

In addition to attending regular workshops or courses, WIP-Hairport goes
one step further. Hairdressers at WIP-Hairport have the chance to swap
with a hairdesser from another european country for one month. Another
culture, different costumes, trends, friends, … how challenging could
that be? The aim is to learn different techniques and demands and
return with new ideas as a way to encourage creativity. Our customers
will benefit the most from this swap, of course, because they will have
another professional haidresser available at WIP-Hairport, someone with
the newest trends from another country.
Silvia already had this experience. She has swapped with Liane who
works at Fortschnitt in Vienna, Austria. Right now we are looking for other Salons who want to do that as well...

check out our websites:

http://hairport.wordpress.com/category/hairdressers-without-limits/

http://www.hairport.pt

Fashion Week

It's that time of the year when the fashion capitals of the world embrace the trends that we'll all be adopting next season.

Manage with a heavy hand and you will lose your best stylists, manage too weakly and you will lose your best clients!

Another Salon owner who never seases to inspire me is Nicola Hollick of Chestnuts in Essex, watch this video of the Chestnuts salon Saturday Girl and see why.

When a great stylist leaves the salon, they have not resigned from the salon, "they have resigned from their manager"

Good Salon Managers are not born good they really care about people and they really care about growing the salon business for the benefit of the salon owners and of all the staff.

So where do you get your inspiration from, and if the answer is a creative person - then you need also to pick an inspirational business leader, because you may be the best hairdresser in the world, or your salon team may be the best there is - but without a well defined strategy for driving clients to the salon all of that talent goes to waist.

If you want to learn how to become a trusted, respected and inspirational Salon Manager please contact Mick Say from here.

Cheers

Bad month for hair

Don't know about you guys but i just hate this time of year!

Now the clocks have gone back it so dark so early and no matter what lights or how many day light bulbs you use you can't beat real day light for cutting and colouring. Colours just don't look right after 4Pm these days and don't even get me started on the weather. Styling hair on wet, windy days is just so annoying when the minute the client leaves the salon you know that your work of art has been ruined! For a profectionist like me its very annoying.

Roll on the spring! Topped by Agyness Deyn and Kate Moss, the only surprise was that a politician's wife made the top 10!

It got me thinking, if the same list was compiled with the best hair who would make the cut - and how many of the same names would appear?

At the end of the year when we asked some top stylist who their icons of the year were here's what they had to say:

http://www.hji.co.uk/blogs/main/2007/12/celerbrity-hair-style-icons-of.html

Now I thought it would be a bit of fun - well just a smidgen of fun - for us to compile the My HJi best tressed list. Once we've got a few nominees I thought we'd have a vote on it to crown the winner.

So throw your names into the melting pot...

And we all nkow that where Victoria goes the world follows.

What does everyone think? Personally, it kind of reminds me of Rizzo from Grease, but please feel free to correct me.

I'll add the latest link when it's ready, but here's the last one to give you an idea - http://www.hji.co.uk/blogs/main/2008/08/celebrity-hairometer-carla-top.html

Each week, someone puts it together and sends it over to me and each week I look at at least two of the entries and think I would have put it in the opposite category... It got me thinking is what's hot subjective? I'm sure no stylist ever lets their celebrity clients leave the salon with a shocker and equally I'm sure no celebrity every steps out on a red carpet thinking I look really bad so where does that breakdown in perception happen?

And when we're compiling these hair-o-meters is there ever a right or wrong? I wonder if there is anyone out there who thinks the classic Audrey Hepburn Breakfast at Tiffany's look is plain and boring.... would love to hear your thoughts.

Innovator or Decorator

As my friend FLINT
would say: There are two types of
designers INNOVATORS and DECORATORS. I think we live in the decoration time. Its safer. It
takes courage to be an innovator. You will not win any prizes at innovation .
People start to appreciate what you do when it becomes Decoration. Few understand innovation. When you innovate the other top hairdressers copy you. as they understand what is going on and then it becomes popular and it will be unlikly that you get the credit.

Decoration is doing a "NEW" Bob or graduation or two tone colours or Multy colouring the hair or layering. Innovation is usualy shock. So few appreciates that.

You will know Flint as it was Flint who was working on the book Cutting Hair the Vidal Sassoon Way with Darrell Benson under the watchfull eye of Christopher Brooker. .

Celebrity Hair Icons

We've been running a feature in HJ and on HJi where some top hairdressers talk about who their celebrity hair icons are. Errol Douglas has named Audrey Hepburn; Andrew Barton says his is Cate Blanchett and Robert Eaton's hair icon is Blondie.

Have you got one? If so would it be someone from the modern day or someone from yesteryear?

Is black IN or OUT?

Is Black IN or
OUT?

I had a girl friend in Berlin
and we sometimes went to the KC club in that incredible town in those
incredible times. David Bowie and Elton John have been seen in that club around that time. One night in 1977, My girlfriend wore everything black. All the cloths were second hand too. It was a fashion before
its time. I worked in Japan
for a few years after that and black
was very much entwined with the Japanese culture, especially black lacquer. Coming back to Europe
in 1980 I found that I was very fashionable with my black cloths and pony tail
hairstyle. Vidal Sassoon had written a book called Sorry I kept you waiting
madam, a few years before and he wanted to bind it in black but was advised that black
was not a good idea and would seem like the bible, and maybe no one would want to bye
it. It would have a non verbal communication of being “heavy”.

 I went to Italy
in 1984 and people would stare at me in the street as I was dressed in black. Comments like “you look like a cockroach” would be banded about. A
club opened called “Black” and
everyone that went wore black to the
club. Then Fendi started to use black
as their IN colour. That put the seal of approval on the “look”. Suddenly,
cloths in black, Hi quality art
book’s in black, black furniture, black bathrooms, black tinted
hair, black everything and it
defined a generation. That was thirty years
ago. People still dress in black. After
seeing a show with models all aglow in colour we see Giorgio Armani come on the
stage IN BLACK. He is not the only one as after every fashion show the stylist comes on to say thank you, and there you see the real people and I might add not the pretty people, but the reality. In 1995 I went to a meeting with some of the
top hairdressers in the UK
and I wore a green suit but everyone was still in black. I looked like a freak. Or more importantly I seemed to, not
belong. Every one of the top
hairdressers that came to this meeting. {{It was a charity doo and a cheque was being handed
over by Susanna York (who was not in black) for Leukaemia research, had black cloths on.{{ It seemed like a uniform.

 Don’t you think that
if someone wears black today it is a
sign of weakness, a sign that we are not “with it”, a sign of old fashioned.
Stuck in the mud! A sign that we are just not getting on with life but have
found our place and are happy with it, thank you? A sign that we come from the 80’s? It’s
something that’s so comfortable and so safe and so sure. It’s difficult to make
a mistake and it’s so easy to match tops and bottoms and shoes. No one could possibly judge us badly!

Then the BLACK iPod comes along and we feel we are tops again.

Paris Hilton goes demure...

I came across this post about Paris Hilton this morning...

Can't decide what I think. The cut is great. Classy and sophisticated, but it's just not her and it's aged her by about 10 years. It got me thinking how much of what cut suits someone is about their physical features and how much is about personality.

As stylists, it's easy for us to get the first bit right; but we've only got limited time to know the second so what are the best ways to get it right?

Brits v American Celebs

There's no question that we Brits are the best in the business when it comes to hairdressing, but seeing the Brits and the Oscars in the last week got me thinking about who does red carpet hair the best.
