Hi! Really hoping for some help here! Me and my partner are planning to open our own salon by the end of the year. I've been a hairdresser for 3 yers and he has been for about 15. However, his job is taking up more time than anticipated so it has fallen to me to sort out the planning... but I really don't know where to start....

I've made up the majority of the Business Plan but when it comes to Financial Projections and profit and loss I'm really lost. I don't have  clue how much we are realistically going to make and it's just dawning on me that I have no idea as to the costs involved such as bills etc.

Also I have the MSDSs for all of the styling and technical products we'll be stocking but I don't know what to include in the COSHH report.

And job descriptions. I've laid out the bare bones of it but I feel like it's missing something.

Originally me and my partner were going to do everything togther but it's not really possible at the moment. Iwould be most grateful for any information you can give me. Thankyou!

The HSE/ Businesslink has some great tips/ templates for a new business and your legal requirements (inc COSHH - Hairdresser specific): -

Business Benefits

Getting started

Hairdressing page/ Risk Assessment specific

Fire Risk Assessment

The local Fire Officer can be great help with the Fire Assessment – he can’t do this for you but help you to understand. He can also discuss the need for smoke detectors/ fire extinguishers and/ or fire blankets

Business start up/ Employment

Speak to Businesslink/ your bank for understanding of the business/ start up costs etc or take the plunge and appoint an Accountant.

If you become a member of the NHF, Employment Handbook/ contracts and assistance will be supplied to any new NHF Salon subscription. Alternatively, you can use a consultant company to assist you with Personnel/ H&S matters such as Peninsula.

Additional info/ assistance/ food for thought check list: -

If any alterations to the fabric of the building are being undertaken and the employment of a builder or contractor is required. Ask for references for previous work/ proof of their Public Liability insurance cover and ascertain if they have what is called 'Contractors All Risks' insurance. This form of cover provides the builder with cover for temporary/ permanent works whilst the the salon refit is being undertaken; if you suffer a fire before hand -over the works (eg - new floor/ ceiling/ partitioning etc) undertaken are not insured.

Electrics; to be installed/ maintained by an approved NICEIC contractor. You will require an Electrical Certificate for the salon/ works completed

PAT Testing; to be undertaken by a competent/ specialist contractor; ask your electrician for advice/ information. See link

If you Rent a Chair or take on Freelancers, check that they have Public Liability/ Treatment Risk insurance prior to starting them.

From a security point of view which works in line with the Salon Insurance, all ground floor accessible opening windows must be protected by key operated window locks. The entrance/ exit doors (other than doors designated as a Fire door - check with Fire officer) must be secured by a 5 lever mortice deadlock or equivalent - Suggest you obtain an insurance quotation prior to any changes to Salon to ascertain what is required. Dependent on the area/ locality and insurance values of the Salon you may need to fit an intruder alarm/ roller shutters and so on. If installing an alarm ensure that the contractor is a member of the NSI or SSAIB and the alarm is subject to a mantenance contract.

Finally, Good Luck and if I can be of further assistance, let me know.
