This morning, as I was reading through my Daily Mirror - never let it be said that I am anything but a classy lady! - I was really shocked to read this belittling of the the hair industry by one of their columnists.
Two years ago Nicky Clarke received an OBE for services to hairdressing and Vidal Sassoon has just been given a CBE. Which means that putting a bad pun like 'fringe benefits' on a shop sign and asking a customer "do you just want a trim?" or "been away yet this year?" while keeping one eye on a pensioner's demi-wave is worthy of a medal from the head of state. What about services to corn removing? http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/top-stories/2009/06/18/hair-and-graces-115875-21450020/

It seems he only thinks that hairdressers are good for silly slogans and small talk. We'd be interested to hear what you think about this but in the meantime we've attached the email address for you to send your comments - features@mirror.co.uk
Having seen this article I can only imagine how ignorant the writer is of the hairdressing industry and the hardwork required in order to succeed within it. This so-called journalist, has clearly not investigated his subject matter or he would know that hairdressing offers huge career choices and financial rewards to those who are talented and that hairdressers, like any other skilled worker are as entitled to an honour from the Queen as anyone else. If he had bothered to go to any reputable salon - regardless of it's name - then I would suggest he would be aware of the variety of services on offer, and the professional manner and environment in which he could receive them. And as for making fun of the names of salons, he ought to take a look at his own page and its cheap play on words with his headlines.
I did not see the article you refer to ,however I find myself insensed with the state of things at the moment .whilst those in so called reputable industries are being laid off and the whole of banking and poletics being exposed as nothing short of criminal .I wonder why the journalist thougtht that they were of such moral and intellectual high ground to look down upon an industry which sustains many people in secure jobs of great physical and mental service to its clients.this is an industry in which ,with honest hard work a good salary or the possability of running your own bussines is possible and im pretty sure the two people mentioned in the article are millionaires, self made ,and not by deciept or causing harm to anyone else either!
are you able to get hold of this person jane to ask them to explain them selves ?
Thank you for your comments and we are hoping to get a lot of response which we want to pass on in order to educate the writer on the professionalism and high standards that this industry requires and the opportunities it offers to those who are prepared to work hard. Clearly the writer is not aware of importance that hairdressing plays not only in offering employment and opportunities to many, but also as a sanctuary to those who work hard in their chosen career but seek refuge in a salon where they relax and have the opportunity to feel good about themselves. It would seem that the hairdressing industry continues to be the butt of jokes for those who are ignorant of what individuals like Vidal Sassoon have achieved and just how great this profession is, and as you can probably tell, I for one am furious about it.
This journalist obviously isn’t informed about the amount of money that salons raise for charity every year either, proving that hairdressers are definitely not fickle or fluffy, we contribute to the economy, give clients confidence, work very hard and support worthwhile causes.
