Everyone has suffered from sunburn at some point and most have a horror story or two to tell about burnt shoulders, noses or backs. But while we are obsessed with protecting the skin from further damage, hair is often forgotten.
Magazines scream of glossy, healthy-looking hair, but once the summer arrives the reality is dryness, colour fade and brittle locks.

When it comes to hair, big was once again beautiful on the autumn/winter 08 catwalks, with the poker straight locks that have dominated recent seasons making way for movement, volume and curls.
That transition has fast made it's way back into salons, as Lisa Shepherd, three times British Hairdressing Awards Midland Hairdresser of the Year, explains: "We are definitely seeing the return of a lot more movement in the hair in the form of soft curl which is being created using velcro rollers and tongs.
"Clients are asking for style, but aren’t necessarily asking for a perm but they are wanting the 'soft, lived-in' curl almost like a 'slept-in' look."

Not many of us like the physical effects of ageing, but unfortunately there are many signs of growing older we simply can’t stop – and grey hair is one of the most dreaded.
For women especially, this can be a major trauma, but it’s not all doom and gloom. According to Lisa Shepherd, three times Schwarzkopf Professional British Colour Technician of the Year, today’s technical advancements in colour mean we can enhance, blend in, disguise or totally cover grey, which is a lot less drastic than going under the knife or having a new set of pearly white veneers.
There are three stages of grey hair, says Lisa. "First it’s the odd stray hair, then a 50% mix of grey with the natural colour, and, finally, total take-over."
But what is it that makes our hair go grey and why are some people lucky enough to bypass the grey stage altogether?
Around the late fifties, says Lisa, natural hair colour fades as the body’s production of melanin decreases. "When melanin production stops altogether, the hair that grows is white. The production of melanin is governed by genetic factors so the best indication of when someone’s hair will become white is when their parents’ hair whitened."
Once the hair has gone grey, it’s important for a colourist to think about the best way to camouflage it, and grabbing the lightest blonde or deepest brunette isn’t the solution.
"A very light blonde often results in a harsh yellow tone being present, so normally as you get older it is advisable to go lighter, as it is softer against your skin tone. Sometimes a few high and lowlights are all that’s needed to begin with," adds Lisa.

When we look at our bodies it's easy to see signs of ageing. Even the most blessed beauty queens can't avoid wrinkles, saggy skin and a tummy that's not quite as firm as it was at 18. But what happens to the hair as we age and how can you help your clients combat dull, limp locks?
World-renowned trichologist Philip Kingsley reveals what happens to ageing hair and the affect that external forces can have on the ageing process.

During the two hour presentation, Beverly demonstrated cutting, finishing and avant garde techniques, including her passion for razor-cutting, colour placement to complement the cut and the art of using hair pieces.

Ponytails are big news this season, here are some key pieces of advice for achieving the perfect ponytails for your clients.

"This look is in high demand due to its sexy, simple style. Use a styling product that adds a textured and kinky feel to the ponytail and think big. Its versatility means that it can be worn on most occasions, whether you are looking for that soft feminine look or a sassy catwalk feel. Blow-dry hair with as much added volume as you can inject, scoop hair back into a ponytail and backcomb where it needs a little extra oomph. The real beauty of it is that it’s supposed to be a casual finish, so don’t worry about all those bits that won’t lie flat."
Barrie Stephen, Leicester
"A ponytail can instantly look chic and elegant. They are just one of those classic styles that will be around forever. This type of ponytail is a bit more complex. It is achieved by separating the hair into two original tails and securing the underneath one with a bungee or covered band. Then the ponytail on top is pulled halfway through and fanned out to create the bow effect. It is an interesting and quirky take on an original style. It’s fun and could be worn with accessories to a black-tie event."
HJ’s 2007 Scottish Hairdresser of the Year Tracey Devine, Angels, Aberdeen
"Ponytails are one of the simplest styles to create and the look can take you anywhere from the tight, low and super-glam, as seen on Mischa Barton, to the soft, curled, worn on one side look seen on Nicole Kidman recently. They work well with full fringes, side, centre or no partings, straight or curly hair. The ponytail even works on short hair for a cool kid look, held in place with decorative pins and slides. Whatever the style of ponytail, the band should always be hidden. Wrap a small section of the loose hair around the base of the ponytail and secure it with a hairpin."

When you see a beautiful hair collection in HJ it is easy to admire the beauty of the hair; but behind each collection there is a long creative process of inspiration, imagination and exploration.
While trend agencies, moods, film and music can have a big influence on what inspires these processes, Schwarzkopf Professional's inspiration for their Essential Looks comes directly from the fashion week catwalks.
"We take the inspiration direct from the international catwalk shows," says Steve Hogan Creative Director. "After the final show finishes in Paris we're ready to shoot the latest collection.
"One of the exciting things after you've done all the planning and written the ideas on paper is seeing the session stylists put it all together and give it their personal slant."

I took my son to karate last night and in a room full of people, we were the only ones with curly hair. No other parent had curls and neither did any of the 30 boys and girls. With his arms and legs thrashing around, the curls on his head bobbed around, but I was surprised no other child had even a kink in their hair.I Flounders calls it the devils curly hair in the Simpson's movie, but is it really? Is naturally curly hair a dying breed ? Ruth@HJi x

Hairdressing never stands still - and 2008 will be no exception. But what key trends will we be seeing on the catwalk? Here's what the experts think...

"The big story for 2008 will be short hair for women. The trend will have a retro 1920s feel with hair cropped short with an androgynous edge; not masculine but rather highly glamorous. Bobs will be shattered and more dressed next year. In fact, all hair will have a really dressed feel as we see the return of blow-drying, finger waves and heated rollers. Men’s hair will also have a retro feel, with a return of the ‘college boy’ look. Cuts will be very precise and groomed, but still retain texture. Shine, texture, glamour and precision are going to be the buzzwords."
Beverly C
“I think 2008 will be all about volume and condition, and hair will have gorgeous texture and shine. Big volume and glamour will be big news so texturising products will be too, enabling people to build volume and that backcombed look without the damaging side effects.”
Steven Goldsworthy, Goldsworthy’s, Swindon

"In 2008, the focus will be on texture. The trend will move away from straight styles and move towards volume and curls. Styles will be matte with volume on top with a resurgence of 80s style."
Antoinette Beenders, global creative director, Aveda
"Hair is rougher, with a matte finish. We’re using products to take down shine and give hair a second
