Salon International is the perfect platform to see some of the most talented hairdressers in the business in action, but for those wanting a more in-depth look or a touch more drama the Salon Live shows were the place to be.

Held in the Platinum Suite, this year's Salon Live shows were an opportunity to see world reknowned brands TONI&GUY and Sassoons and internationally acclaimed hairdressers Tim Hartley and Patrick Cameron in action.

And for those wanting a glimpse of the future of the industry, TIGI's Inspirational Youth and Sassoon Academy's Future Creatives showed the potential of some of the talented young stylists and platform artists coming through.

For three long October days, ExCel in London's Docklands became the haven for hairdressers that is Salon International.

It goes without saying that there were hundreds of on-trend hairstyles cut, styled and finished on the numerous stages around the Hair Show, but there were plenty of other stories that caught the hearts and minds.

Sassoon Future Creatives Prove a Class Act

It's always great to catch a glimpse of what the hair industry's future talent have to offer, so it was no surprise that the Salon Live theatre was filled to the brim with eager stylists waiting to see what the Sassoon Future Creatives show would hold.

But it was an established favourite - British Hairdresser of the Year nominee Mark Hayes, Sassoon's international creative director - who opened the show. "You will see the next generation of hairdressers to look out for," he told the expectant audience.

TIGI's Inspirational Youth Rock with Rockaholic

For most, the opportunity to appear on stage at a hair show is the culmination of years of training, building a name for yourself and working as a platform artist, but for the 14 members of TIGI's Inspirational Youth members that opportunity came early in their careers at Salon International.

"This is the sixth time we have done this and it is dear to our heart," said TIGI international creative director Anthony Mascolo.

"As a company we give 12 to 14 youngsters who are starting to become stylists the opportunity to learn how to get on stage, present and work as a team. This show is the result of that and you are going to be blown away."

Sean Hanna's Start Up Secrets for Hair Salons

Salon owner and Rage International founder Sean Hanna delivered a truly motivational seminar called Start up Secrets, which no aspiring salon owner could afford to miss, at Business Extra at Salon International.

"Fifty per cent of all salons go bankrupt within five years. Typically the reason that salons fail are for reasons that were there way before they opened," he warned the audience.

Julie Eldrett Demonstrates How Clients See Your Salon

Julie Eldrett's Business Extra seminar at Salon International delivered a straight to the point, easy to grasp picture of how customers see their salon.

Entitled 'View your salon through the customers' eyes,' Julie presented research that she had commissioned in order to demonstrate just how salons are perceived by their customers.

With research showing that clients are returning to the salon less frequently than in the past, understanding how your customer views your business has never been so vital.

Tim Hartley Wows The Crowds with his Simplistic Hairdressing

Marching male models sporting textured quiffs and face-framing hairstyles made for a dramatic entrance at the Tim Hartley Salon Live Show.

"I'm thrilled to be here," Tim told the full-house audience in the Salon Live Theatre. "I'd like to give you some background to the images I create."

He named architecture and street fashion as two of his main sources of inspiration and urged the audience to watch what is happening on the street to stay fresh and current. But he also emphasised the importance of fashion from days gone by and the strong tailored look of yesteryear.

Sassoon Academy Stuns with "Off-kilter" Collection

Sassoon Academy, presented by Sassoon Professional, delivered the anticipated mix of stunning looks created using precision cutting and perfect colour placement - but this year there seemed was more focus on texture, with the latest collection, Da Da Dolls delivering a real wow factor, with hair that combined the trademark sleek bobs, with "off-kilter" heavily textured hair.

Nergish Wadia-Austin Teaches the Art of Performance in Hair and Beauty Stylist

Renowned business guru Nergish Wadia-Austin delivered a highly inspiring seminar entitled Doubling Stylist's Chair-Side Sales at Salon Business Extra.

The basis of the session was describing the vast difference between what Nergish calls a PHAB (Performance in Hair and Beauty) stylist and an ordinay stylist. And Nergish delivered some key messages in staying ahead in business today.

"As a stylist, you have to remember that if you are making money you are of value to that business," she said.

Back to the Basics of Salon Management with Jon MacLeod

It was back to basics at Jon MacLeod's Business Extra, sponsored by Salon Genius, when he took the audience on a journey of his business - the award-winning Paterson SA salon group.

"It's becoming more and more difficult to manage people - there are millions of reasons for that - but managing and motivating people is not easy today."

Jon explained how he motivates, rewards and manages his team and says that the secret, to doing it well is the art of delegation.

"If you are the person responsible for everything you will be exhausted. You need to teach people to spin their own plates," he said.

Mahogany Do 'Romantica' at their Salon Seminar

It was all about love at the Mahogany Salon Seminar where the team demonstrated their Romantica Collection, which combines rock with the old English dandy for a strong new romantics tone.

"This concept was inspired by the classic pistols at dawn fight over girls that arrives in the east end of London in 2010," Richard Thompson, Mahogany international creative director, explained as he and his colleagues demonstrated variations of the collection.

£6,000 software prize for Weymouth salon

A £6,000 salon management system which was won at Salon International by owners of hair and beauty salon Elegance in Weymouth, Dorset, has enabled the salon to kick off 2009 in style.

Co-owners Sonia Fraga and Judith Hansford entered Integrity Software's competition at the show in October 2008, and were picked at random from over 100 participants to win a prize that's set to transform the way they do business.

Men's Hair Goes Military Style

It's no secret that male grooming is now a fundamental part of the hair industry, with men making up nearly a third of salon clientele.

Many leading manufacturers now have bespoke men's ranges, shows, seminars and stands throughout Salon International were all demonstrating the return to barber shop style.

Taking inspiration from the short back and sides of the 50s, men's hair had a military feel with hair left slightly longer on top for a smart look with an edgy twist.

hob Salons Create a Colour Spectacular

Firey reds, vivacious violets and beautiful blondes set the tone as hob salons showed you can push the boundaries but still meet your clients' needs in their Salon Seminar.

Taking inspiration from Vivienne Westwood, artist Marcus Rothko and Louis Vitton, this was all about using colour to create a wow factor.

Colour guru Christel Lundqvist created a series of stunning hairstyles, as blondes were given flashes of black, violet and blue; reds were infused with coppers and plums and brunettes received the glossiest shine.

TONI&GUY's Flux Wows The Salon Live Crowd

T&G-FLUX-Collection.jpg Combining a preview of the TONI &GUY's innovative new collection with the team's stunning work from London Fashion Week and an eclectic set of adventurous avant-garde looks, there was plenty to inspire at the TONI&GUY Salon Live show.

As the Ting Tings' blared through the speakers, a fleet of 15 models filled the stage, showcasing stunning looks from TONI & GUY's latest collection, Flux.

From cool blonde voluminous curls to dark flicks accented with orange and fuchsia flicks and a 21st-century take on a chic, sweet Julie Andrews-inspired short cut, the collection was a riot of varied, vibrant colours and shapes.

Steven Carey Creates Hair Turbans

"Anything goes in avant garde," that was the key message from Steven Carey who, assisted by three junior members of his art team, created looks from his Turban Collection on the HJ Stage.

Tim Hartley wows Salon Live audience

Simplistic elegance was the buzz phrase of Tim Hartley's stunning show for Salon Live. There was, he said, a return to classic techniques with a twist - something reflected beautifully in the looks he presented to the capacity crowd.

Tim began by sharing some of the major references for his work, and as always with this master of cutting, they were diverse and inspirational, including Italian furniture designers, cutting edge photographers and modern art.

Mahogany Create Illusions with Optec

Has it ever occurred to you that creating a great hairstyle is just a series of optical illusions to create shape and movement?

Mahogany spotted the optical illusions in hair shapes and worked with them to create their Optech collection of two distinct styles that play with curves, asymmetry and geometric shapes to create balance and movement.

Demonstrated in a two hour Salon International Seminar the creative team created a variety of hair cuts that were interpretations of the Optech's two key looks.

Thirteen may be unlucky for some, but not for the talented hairdressers who will appear on the stage at the Albert Hall after being selected as finalists of the 2008 Alternative Hair VISIONARY AWARDS took place last week.

Vidal Sassoon's 80th Birthday Gala Dinner

This was the year when legendary hairdresser Vidal Sassoon turned 80, a milestone that couldn't go unnoticed.

To celebrate, HJ have got together with Alternative Hair to put on a not-to-be-missed evening to celebrate the hairdressing icon's achievements and inspiration whilst raising money for Leukaemia Research.

Evening Events at Salon International 2008

The excitement and inspiration doesn't stop once the sun goes down. This year two evening events promise to make the Salon International weekend the most memorable yet.

Vidal Sassoon 80th Birthday Celebration Gala Dinner in aid of Leukaemia Research
Saturday 18 October 19.00-1.00, ExCel London, sponsored by TIGI, Ales International and BaBylissPRO.

This evening promises to be a particularly memorable and inspiring event as probably the biggest name in the history of British hairdressing is honoured.

This year marks the 80th birthday of Vidal Sassoon and HJ together with Alternative Hair is presenting him with a birthday party fit for a hairdressing legend.

The night will include a sit-down meal for 600 guests, followed by stunning catwalk presentation by some of the biggest names in hairdressing, including Anthony Mascolo, Daniel and Joshua Galvin, Trevor Sorbie and Tim Hartley.

Andrew Barton is International Creative Director for Saks, one of the UK's leading hair and beauty franchise salon groups. His outstanding talent is well recognised within the industry - having won the title of British Hairdresser of the Year in 2006.

A host of top names will make the Interiors Zone their home for the three days of Salon International.

Taking a large space for the third year running is Aston & Fincher. The impressive 2,153sq ft stand will form the centre of the zone, offering furniture from three Italian designer ranges - MG Bross, Gamma and GV Design.

This year, all three companies have created new ranges, which will be on view for the first time at Salon International - including the FA Porsche Black range and the Nutopia Backwash Unit.

Errol Douglas is one of the UK's leading hairdressers. Renowned for his stunning photographic work, Errol has won several of the world's most coveted awards, from the Afro Hairdresser of the Year Award (three times) to the Cosmopolitan Style Award and the AIPP Grand Trophy to the Fellowship for British Hairdressing's Hairdresser of the Year and Gold Star Salon Consumer Hairdresser of the Year Award.

How To Get To Salon International

There is only one place to be over the weekend of 18-20 October - ExCel London for the three-day event that is Salon International. And here's how you can get there.

By Car

When driving to ExCeL London follow signs for Royal Docks, City Airport and ExCeL
There is easy access to the M25, M11, A406 and A13
ExCeL London is not located in the Congestion Charge zone
There is car parking for over 4,000 cars
The majority of parking is pay and display. If you park in the multi-storey car park at the west end of the site, up will need to pay at a pay point in the Boulevard.

By Tube and DLR (Docklands Light Railway)

The Jubilee Line is recommended as the quickest route to ExCeL London. At Canning Town change to the DLR (upstairs on platform 3) for the quick two-stop journey to Custom House for ExCeL Station (not King George V)

ExCeL London is located in zone 3 and London Underground tickets are valid on the DLR.

Trains from Tower Gateway go direct to Custom House for ExCeL

When travelling from Bank on the DLR change at Westferry for a Beckton bound train

When travelling from Lewisham take a Stratford train and change at Poplar for a Beckton bound train. Alternatively take the first Bank train and change at Westferry.

Waterloo International Station is just 19 mins from Canning Town, via the Jubilee line and DLR.

'The Focus Is On Luxury For The Hair Industry'

All the hard work paid off and I was really pleased with the Saks show at Salon International. The team were on fire and it was great to showcase our Indulgence collection.

It was really exciting to get some wonderful feedback from our British and International friends and press and hopefully it will generate lots of positive coverage of the collection.

As for me, there was no way I wouldn't be at Salon, but I felt a bit impaired by my leg. It was uncomfortable throughout and it was a case of having to grin and bear it a little.

I certainly couldn't be as animated or flexible as I would usually be during a show, but my assistant Matt was an absolute star and he was hanging on every second waiting for me to fall off the chair I was perched on.
