Certain hairdressers make a big impression early on in their careers and their list of achievements starts to mount after only a few years in the industry. Here are some young stars of hairdressing who HJI predicts will go stella in 2010 and beyond.
Shaun Hall, Mark Leeson Hair Body & Mind,Mansfield, Nottinghamshire
Winner of Best Newcomer at HJ's 2009 British Hairdressing Awards, 2010 is set to be the year that Shaun Hall of Mark Leeson Hair Body & Mind, in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire really makes his mark on the industry. With his own distinctive style sure to attract attention, Shaun is also bound to impress with his innovative approach to hairdressing.
After just six years in the industry, Shaun has already impressed some of the leading names in the business, including his boss Mark Leeson who has made Shaun artistic director of his award-winning salon.
It's an impressive CV considering Shaun only stumbled upon the idea of becoming a hairdresser after watching a friend cut hair in a small local salon. He fell in love with the way the stylist transformed her client and decided that hairdressing was a brilliant way for him to express his creativity and love of all things fashion-related.
As a member of the artistic team, Shaun has flourished and regularly works with Mark and award-winning stylist Terri Kay on shoots, shows and seminars.
With an undeniable passion for his craft, HJ predicts Shaun is definitely one to watch for the future.
Skyler Mcdonald, seanhanna, London
Skyler McDonald's unique way of looking at hair has meant she has quickly gained a large and loyal clientele and the respect of her peers. Nominated for Avant Garde Hairdresser of the Year in HJ's 2009 British Hairdressing Awards, shortlisted for the Alternative Hair Visionary Award 2009 and winner of last year's TIGI Visionary Award, Skyler is building on the impressive foundations built in the early stages of her career.
Skyler's passion for hairdressing began at the age of 11 when her parents relocated from Texas to the UK. Skyler was inspired by the London scene and at the age of 17 she gave up a degree in art to take up a nine-month apprenticeship at the Sassoon Academy, London.
The seanhanna group recognised Skyler's raw but impressive skills and offered her a job at its Canary Wharf salon. Within a year of joining the group, Skyler had won a place in the Fellowship for British Hairdressing's FAME Team - an experience which helped shape her career.
Photographic shots, training seminars and hair show presentations are all part of Skyler's remit at seanhanna, but her heart still lies in working with her clients.
Says Skyler: "For me there is nothing more satisfying than seeing the delight in the eyes of a happy client. I love to play with someone's image - to change and develop them - improving both their presentation and their confidence."
Alfie Booth, Andrew Collinge, Liverpool/Manchester
Alfie Booth is an incredibly gifted stylist, who came to International attention in 2009 when he won the Alternative Hair Visionary Award in front of a capacity crowd at London's Royal Albert Hall.
Alfie completed his apprenticeship with Andrew Collinge Training and now works between the new Graduates salon, where he is creative director, and the Andrew Collinge Manchester city centre salon, where he is style director.
Alfie is an integral member of the Andrew Collinge artistic team and is fast becoming a recognised name within UK hairdressing. He has twice been shortlisted for Newcomer of the Year in HJ's British Hairdressing Awards, while maintaining a successful column as a popular stylist.
Alfie also works on photo shoots, presents seminars and shows and has worked alongside Andrew Collinge and the team at a number of prestigious events for L'Oréal Professional in London and New York.
Says Alfie: "The thing I love most about our industry is that if you have unwavering ambition for this craft, you will get noticed sooner or later. How successful you become is entirely in your hands. My ambition for the future is to never become complacent or disillusioned and to keep my passion for what I do as intense as it is now."
Niki Moores, Michael Van Clarke, London
Niki Moores first came to industry-wide attention when she won Junior of the Year at HJ's 2008 British Hairdressing Business Awards. Niki's passion for client service, balanced with an enviable creative flair for hairdressing hugely impressed judges.
Despite graduating in fashion, design and management, Niki realised her heart lay with hairdressing, and while her friends were rushing off to find jobs in the fashion industry, Niki took time out to plan her career in hairdressing. Extensive research brought her to the Michael Van Clarke Academy where she gained a place and was quickly put through her paces. "It was pure adrenalin and excitement that got me through," recalls Niki. "Although, nothing prepared me for the physical, mental and emotional rigour of being a trainee".
Training gave Niki a thorough grounding in both the creative and logistic elements of hairdressing. "The first and most important lesson learned was the importance of a good attitude and attention to detail," says Niki.
Now a successful stylist with a busy column, Niki also works backstage at a array of fashion events and has built up an impressive portfolio of stunning hair images. In 2009, she narrowly missed out on becoming a member of the 2010 FAME Team, but does not intend to let that stop her flourishing in her chosen career.
Says Niki: "I can't wait to see what the future brings, the people I will work with and the beauty that I know I can create. My ambition is to become a renowned and successful session stylist."

Charismatic young hairdresser, Chris Appleton has already made his mark on the industry following a year in the phenomenally successful 2009 FAME Team - the first to be nominated for Artistic Team of the Year in HJ's British Hairdressing Awards.
But this isn't Chris's only claim to fame - he was also shortlisted for Newcomer of the Year in HJ's 2008 British Hairdressing Awards, and at the end of 2009 was named BBC Young Hairdresser of the Year.
Says Chris: "Hairdressing has been my passion for as long as I can remember, as a hairdresser you're an artist - sculpting molding and creating. And at the same time making people not only look, but feel fantastic."
Chris thrives on the fact that a career in hairdresser involves constant learning and development and loves its close link to the world of fashion.
"I think hairdressing is a very exciting industry to be part of as it never stops moving. It's not a job - it's a passion," says Chris. "For me there is nothing more rewarding than creating a hairdressing collection, starting with an idea and developing it into a masterpiece. It's just another great part of this industry."
