The trend for pretty plaits has taken the celebrity world by storm with style-setter Nicole Richie opting for various takes on the look.

Gone are the days when plaits were seen as a schoolgirl staple, braids are now bang up-to-date for an updo with interest.

Gary Hooker and Michael Young created a chic plaited style for the Matrix Honey Luxe Collection.Whether they are worn in a Salma Hayek milk-maid 'do or Jennifer Aniston's peekaboo fringe braid, plaits can jazz up a red carpet look.

Plaits are also perfect for a deconstructed, summer hippy feel, with hip young things like Peaches Geldof sporting flowers and plaits combos and Miss Richie going for a relaxed plaited half updo for pottering in the park.

Aaron Blondell, John Carne Hairdressing has advice for creating the look. "The key as ever is to not look 'done', Summer is generally about relaxed, fun looks, you don't want anything that looks too contrived," says Aarron.

Nicole may be the current plaits princess but other celebrities and the general public are catching on fast. By offering a simple side plait or braided feature to a look, a client can wear a party perfect style that will last all night.

"Braids can be surprisingly versatile, ranging from Grecian to folk depending on the styling, and all will be big news with festival goers and trend setters this season," says Aaron.
