But while a block colour may be possible, it's a mistake waiting to happen - and that is when salons can come to rescue and offer their expertise.

Award-winning colourist Lisa Shepherd, from Lisa Shepherd, Midlands, says colour correction is the most requested service at her colour salon in Kidderminster.

As more and more people opt to colour their hair at home, she expects all salons to see a rise in clients coming in for colour correction services.

Understanding the Market for Male Grooming

Dated: June 11, 2009 1:02 PM

Dated: June 11, 2009 1:02 PM

james dean.jpgThe iconic male film and rock 'n' roll stars that gripped the world in the 50s didn't just make headlines because of their performances, but their style - complete with short, sharp and perfectly tailored hair - created a fashion movement that is still evident today.

Since then we've seen a wild and wonderful mixture of men's haircuts, including the excessive new romantics look, big 80s hair, highlighted 'curtains' and of course, the look that required no hair at all- the skinhead.

Fast-forward to 2009, and men are still wearing variations of the traditional 40s and 50s haircuts, but there's also a big movement towards 80s 'anything goes' hair.

All this means that catering for today's male clients isn't as easy as it was when the whole male population opted for a grade two all over.

Akin's Konizi's Hairdressing Career in Pictures

Akin-BHA-08.jpgOver the past few years Akin Konizi and his team have become a force to be reckoned with. And while it seems that success has come relatively quickly, Akin has been working tirelessly for the past 25 years.

He started his apprenticeship in 1979 at Alan International in London, and loved nothing more than working with the old techniques. "I initally wanted to be a fashion designer but after working at my cousin's salon, I was hooked on hairdressing," he explains.

He set up Hair on Broadway with his best friends Paul Simbler and Clive Collins in 1983 - and the rest, as they say, is history. "We were disheartened with working in London so chose to open our business in the suburbs. We only recently returned to the capital with our academy in Camden Town and salon in Baker Street."

In 2001, Akin won HJ's Eastern Hairdresser of the Year and later went on to win 2005 London Hairdresser of the Year before being crowned with the ultimate accolade, 2008 British Hairdresser of the Year. His precision cutting and beautiful imagery have made him one of the most sought-after stylists of his generation.

Here are some of Akin's favourite images that have defined his career to date.

Habia is warning salon owners not to fall foul of companies targeting small businesses with misleading information about new health and safety law posters.

Employers have a legal duty under the Health and Safety Information for Employees Regulations (HSIER) to display the official Health and Safety Executive (HSE) law poster in each workplace or provide each worker with a copy of the equivalent pocket card. A new law poster has been produced by the HSE, but employers have until 5 April 2014 to replace the posters or provide pocket cards.

Following the sad passing of Charlie's Angels star Farrah Fawcett, we celebrate the iconic look that made her a style idol and the sweetheart of her generation.

Farrah's long flowing locks and those famous flicks created a new style that has been imitated by many, as British Hairdresser of the Year nominee Errol Douglas explains: "I loved Farrah's look, defined by her flicks and blondeness," he says.

"She became an icon because nobody had that type of hair. Fellow blondie Bo Derek went for the braided look, while Farrah was distinctive for her blonde, power style.

"She had that all American square jaw and beautiful features."
