The humble bob hairstyle has just turned 100 years old. We pay tribute to this stylish staple of salons everywhere.
Inspired by Joan of Arc, the bob was invented in 1909 by Paris-based hairdresser Antoine. Who'd have thought that the style would be just as popular 100 years later!
From Louise Brooks's sleek, black 1920's classic cut to Julie Christie's soft bouffant bob in the film 'Shampoo,' our love affair with the bob is endless.
Luke Reed from The Hair Advice Centre, Surrey, gives us some insight into the staying power of this popular style.
"The bob is a timeless hairstyle. I believe the reason why it is still popular after so many years is down to its incredible versatility.

"You can alter it by adding layers, slices of colour, fringes and wear it smooth or curly.
"Whether you create a short bob for a client with small defined features or something with more length around the front for a those with rounder faces, whatever a woman's face shape or hair texture, there's a bob to suit everyone," says Luke.
It can be anything from prim and proper to sexy and sultry and die-hard fans include 60's designer Mary Quant and American Vogue editor Anna Wintour, who have rarely been spotted without theirs.

"The bob presents so many styling possibilities for both hairdressers and the client and it's this kind of flexibility which will help ensure that this look stays around for centuries to come," Luke adds.
Here's to another 100 years of bobbed beauty, we'd be lost without you!
